Straight from the fiery pits of Hades (and the folks at Capcom, of course) comes a devilishly addictive video game with action to spare. Based on the comic book by Todd McFarlane, Spawn has become a successful cartoon, a mediocre movie, an action figure, and, with the advent of Spawn: In the Demon's Hand, a video game.
Spawn's entry in the video game world is not so much a fighting game along the lines of Virtua Fighter, but more akin to a smaller scale Gauntlet Legends, with power-ups and weapons that lie around a 3-D landscape that's filled with ferocious enemies. Spawn: In the Demon's Hand offers three distinct fighting modes--team, battle royal, and boss--and features graphics that are so sharp, it feels almost like you're playing one of McFarlane's comic-book characters come-to-life.
Unfortunately, the game's controls are somewhat difficult to master--movement is controlled by the digital pad, and aiming is performed with the analog joystick. Add the incredibly quick action and multiple characters on the screen, and you've got what can be sometimes a confusing mess.
The faint of heart will be pleased to see that, along with toggles for the skill and volume levels, Spawn: In the Demon's Hand features a three-stage violence option that allows the player to ease the gore. Parents should note, however: even with the violence level turned all the way down, Spawn's idea of conflict resolution still involves a magic chain to the noggin. --Benjamin Reese

Bloody Marvelous, mostly!,

Spawn, is a game that is alot of fun if you realyy get into it. Though sometimes it get difficult with the frequent death rate, in the end you still love the havoc you can reek with a missile launcher or magical chains. The graphics are crisp and the camera is pretty decent. The framerate is a solid 60 fps and the weapons are plentiful and amusing. If your a fighting game fan and you want take a break from massive combo capcom fighters, pick this title up. If your looking for fighting depth, look elsewhere. This is maniac fighters only. At least a rental, for everyone else.

Spawn:In the Demons Hand, is a game reminscent of Gauntlet, where more friends are not only better, they are needed to unlock more aspects of the storyline, and aid in unlocking special characters. The graphics are top rate, the special powers are wonderfull to see if you are a fan of the comics, HBO animated series, or someone just in awe of the world of SPAWN. The controls have a slight learning curve of a half hour, or so, until you master the art of aquiring or switching weapons in combat. All the characters are there, each with distinct abilites, some abilities like the SPAWN Mythos drain your very life force when you use them. Others merely require you to reload, the Angels from Heaven are stunning, plus they can move as one would expect(they fly). The Violater, is here in all his glory, the characters are well rounded, the choice of weapons is excellent. This game has a high replay value if only to unlock the extra 24 characters, multiplayer is fantastic, the display icons could be larger, but aside from an occasional camera angle snafu (i.e. you get blindsided in corners), this game is a must have for fans, & multiplayers alike.

Spawn: not as good as it could have been.,

The first time you boot up this game in your Dreamcast you are going to be impressed. This game looks great but doesn't play very well. The concept is along the lines of a deathmatch. You choose a mode of play; team play, boss attack or deathmatch, then pick a character and level. Gameplay consists of running around wonderfully designed levels shooting, blowing up, and slicing apart your oponents. All of the popular characters from the comic book are here, and some of the levels might be familiar to a few fans too.The graphics are absolutly mind blowing. Some of the best graphics I have seen on the Dreamcast to date. The characters are highly detailed and the level design is wonderful. After you pick your jaw off the ground and grab the controler to start playing things begin to go down hill. The controls for this game are not very user friendly at all, and the camera angles are going to frustrate just about everyone who plays it. You aim with the analog stick and move with the digital pad, all while using the buttons to jump and change weapons. If we all had three hands it might work but for those of us with only two, it is very frustrating. Overall the game is alright, wonderful graphics but horible controls. Single player can get a bit old fast but this game is a lot of fun with someone to spar off against. I would only advise the die hard spawn fans to buy it, the rest of you casual gamers might want to rent it first. Spawn is not a must have for the Dreamcast.
