Book Description

July 8, 2008 Spawn
This is the Spawn spin-off that diehard Spawn fans have been craving! Spawn: The Undead concentrates on the popular HellSpawn character once known as Al Simmons, champion of balance between Heaven and Hell. This series took a unique "Japanese Horror" style look at the Spawn mythos, focusing on urban horror. Horrifically beautiful stories by Paul Jenkins and Dwayne Turner...a must for any Spawn fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars A deep view on the human soul; great food for thought, August 5, 2010
This review is from: Spawn: The Undead (Paperback)
Now when I first picked this up I was a bit disappointed that Todd McFarlane had little to do with it and that it was in very little relation to the original series. In fact, this series has little to do with spawn [Al Simmons] at all, which somewhat upset me. But upon reading the first issue, I became somewhat enthralled. As the series progressed it got, for the most part, more and more interesting, focusing on certain types of people who commit wicked acts. My personal favourite issues were #5 and #6, which are the only two that are in direct relation, and issue #7 which dealt with the issue of phobias in what i saw to be a rather philosophical fashion.

If you are a huge fan of the original Spawn series, this might prove to be a bit of a let down considering it has very little to do with the original plot and has more to do with humans and philosophy, using the hellspawn as a vessel for the information. Jenkins Turner proves to be fairly good at telling a story and the presence of Todd is evident, but it is definitely different to what Spawn fans are used to. And, as said before, there isn't much action in it. Either way, if you're in the mood for some deep thinking and pretty good artwork, spawn style, you might enjoy this. Maybe you should start with just buying one or two issues to start with to see if it's your fancy [I don't recommend starting with issue #2 or #4, those were my least favorites, although they were somewhat clever].

I enjoyed it anyway =]

3.0 out of 5 stars A new take on Spawn, but doesn't work, February 15, 2009
This review is from: Spawn: The Undead (Paperback)
Spawn: The Undead, is an interesting idea for a Spawn comic. It's an original concept. Every issue it brings a new character that Spawn get's involved with. With the problem with this is, the characters themselves aren't very interesting, and those that are, their stories suddenly end as you begin understanding them. It doesn't work to bring in these characters when soon after their story is done and it moves on to the next. But this is not my only problem, there simply isn't enough Spawn.

Spawn will have a couple moments that are meaningful to some degree, but working with these other characters don't work if they don't stay with them for very long. Although some of the stories were a fun read, there just wasn't enough to keep my interested.

The art wasn't too bad, but like the story, doesn't stack up to the other Spawn works.

For Spawn fans, it's something new, that I might recommend. But not to purchase. If someone you know has a copy, I would say you should read it. But it is disappointing, but not terrible in defense.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good TPB, December 7, 2008
This review is from: Spawn: The Undead (Paperback)
Of the 9 compiled issues in this trade paperback, the first few are awful. But the later ones are really gripping. The artwork isn't as good as the original Spawn series. Overall, I'm glad I have this book. I recommend that Spawn fans pick this up. The good thing is that this book compiles ALL the episodes of this mini-series.
