This review is from: Speak of the Devil: 14 Tales of Crimes and Their Punishments (Five Star First Edition Mystery) (Hardcover)
Joe Gores is my kind of crime writer. First of all, he has a very wide range of knowledge and he is not afraid to weave little known, but interesting facts into his stories. Two, he really can turn a plot on the proverbial dime. Finally, he does not waste words. These stories range from the 1950's to the 1980's, and span the gamut from science fiction to thriller to pure crime fiction. No story is over thirty pages. The plots are almost without exception strong, and Gores displays his characteristic ability to make sharp 90 degree turns in where the story is going in several stories, "Killer Man" being the best example. If you're new to Gores, be sure to check out his excellent DKA Series set in San Francisco. The best of that series is 32 Cadillacs, but there are many fine, fine books in it and you have hours of reading pleasure ahead of you. |
