Book Description

June 1, 2001
This Scriptural Rosary prayer book presents the richness of the Sacred Mysteries of the Most Holy Rosary in terms that children can visualize and understand. Gus Muller’s watercolors use the full palette of color expression to explore the depths of the agony of Christ crucified and reach the heights of the Blessed Virgin Mary’s glorious reign as Queen of Heaven and Earth. Christine Haapala’s succinct and most apt meditation selections yield a wealth of spiritual insight into the mysterious events of the lives of Jesus and Mary. The Scriptures and watercolor illustrations coupled with the prayers of the Most Holy Rosary provide a rich meditation platform for teaching prayer and devotion to Jesus and Mary.

About the Author

About Christine Haapala - Author

Nearly a decade ago, after teaching a tenth grade CCD class which integrated the fifteen mysteries of the Rosary into the Bible Study course curriculum, Christine Haapala, the author, thought "What if there is a connection between the 150 Psalms and 150 Hail Marys of the Rosary?" In the Catechism of the Catholic Church this connection is explained as "Medieval piety in the West developed the prayer of the rosary as a popular substitute for the Liturgy of the Hours." (CCC 2678) Based on this inspiration, the author completed and, then, published her first book From Genesis to Revelation: Seven Scriptural Rosaries, Christendom Press, 1996. Since then, she has continued to write other books and newspaper articles, and in the summer of the Jubilee Year, she started Speak, Lord, I am Listening. This book is designed to introduce, teach, and share the beauty of the mysteries of the Rosary with young children.

About Gus Muller - Watercolor Illustrator

After retiring from a civil engineering career, he fulfilled a life long desire to study art and paint seriously. It wasn’t long before he discovered his interest and talent for watercolors and in the creative effects he could achieve with the medium’s transparent paints. For the past 13 years he has specialized mainly in landscapes, seascapes, florals and portraits, many of which are displayed in various locations in Virginia, Maryland, and New Jersey. In the late 1990s, he did paintings of Mother Theresa and the Blessed Mother, and a painting of Holy Spirit Church which were auctioned to benefit his parish’s Knights of Columbus chapter.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent way to share the Rosary with your children!, July 3, 2001

This review is from: Speak, Lord, I am Listening (Paperback)
This is also an excellent book for anyone who wants to learn to pray the Rosary. The illustrations are beautiful and thoughtfully done. The layout of the book was chosen carefully to help children and those just learning the Rosary to concentrate on the Sacred Mysteries, rather than struggle to remember what comes next. Each decade of the Rosary is laid out on two facing pages with the full text of the Our Father, Hail Mary (once per decade), Glory Be, and the Fatima Prayer included, so that while you or your children's hearts are still learning these prayers you aren't distracted by the need to recall them. The accompanying Scripture texts teach about the Mysteries themselves and draw one deeper into prayer and meditation.

The only drawback is the size of this book. I wish there was a smaller version that I could tuck into my chldren's Bibles.

This review is from: Speak, Lord, I am Listening (Paperback)
For years I have been looking for just the right book to introduce the Catholic faith and the Rosary to people who are new to both. This book is it. It is beautifully illustrated, on high quality paper, and very simply and profoundly presents a step by step method for praying the Rosary while meditating on the mysteries and the scriptures. If you have always wondered what the Rosary has to do with the Christian faith or the Bible, or you are just learning the faith and traditions of the Christian religion, this is an excellent book for meditation and prayer. Directors of Religious Education, Youth Ministers, Catechists, Pastors, and those involved in the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) or Children (RCIC) will find this an invaluable text to be used in your classrooms. Parents will also find this holds the attention of even the most restless children when praying the Rosary at home.
