ACOUSTIC HEAVEN,
By
This review is from: Speak No Evil (Audio CD)
Im so glad that again with this release Flora has chosen more of an acoustic feel for the album ( as she did with the last one on Narada Jazz. Also its wonderful again to here her signing more standards and originals in English ...I love the tone and sound of her accent when she sings in English it gives the standards a whole new and feel....as always the musicians are superb....Go Flora, a woman at the top of her craft!

This is such a neat album. Though not as outstanding as Perpetual Emotion, Flora just seems to be having fun here with some great songs and relaxed delivery. Many of the songs have a feel of a live performance & it was probably just that way with no overdubs. Who's voice wouldn't crack a bit on an exhausting performance of Moon Dreams. Her rendition of It Ain't Necessarily So is outstanding!!!--and what a great way to interpret the song. Her backing musicians make this great jazz and it's nice to see her settled into a mature jazz singer in total command of her craft.

...but since it's Flora after all, we'll round it up to four. I hate to say it, but based on this album & seeing all but one show of her 2003 run at Yoshi's, time is catching up to Flora's voice. That said, what a voice for time to catch up to! Like her other Narada releases, this one features excellent fidelity, traps playing by Airto that will bring a smile to your face & an almost palpable sense of Flora's wonderful spirit being right there in the room with you. To these ears, the Brazilian numbers still work better than the North American ones, but heaven knows she's earned the right to take a swing at 'em.

Flora's Music Makes Me Smile,

I have been a hugh Flora fan for many years. I first heard her on a George Duke album thirty some odd years ago and I was hooked. Her passion for what she does poUrs through every song. This has become my favorite Flora Album. It has surpassed "Nothing Will Be As It Was Tomorrow". The standards are pure and the Brazillian songs on the album are, quite frankly in my opinion, her best. I am waiting for the next album.
