About the Artist

Perry has been playing professionally along the East Coast for over 30 years. His formal studies were at Miami University of Ohio and Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he studied with Joe Viola, John LaPorta and Charlie Mariano. Moving to the Washington, DC area in 1976, Perry became an established figure in the "new" music scene. During this time, he had the opportunity to perform with and learn from Don Cherry, Anthony Braxton, Sam Rivers and many others. From 1994-1998 Perry led the successful jazz quartet "Clarity". Since then he has been directing his quartet and contributing on projects with many area bands, including the Thad Wilson Jazz Orchestra and the well-received jazz/funk trio, Bassment Breaks. Conticchio has performed at many notable venues and festivals including; Blues Alley, One Step Down, The Bohemian Caverns, The D.C. Jazz Festival, The East Coast Jazz Festival, The Smithsonian Folk-Life Festival, The National Gallery of Art and more. Conticchio has built his 35-year career using the singular jazz sounds of the 1960's as a point of departure. His last CD, titled "The Perry Conticchio Quartet" and recorded in 1999, contains classic jazz as well as several original songs that highlight Perry's unique improvisational style. His latest release, "Speak Your Truth", features the newly re-formed and energized Perry Conticchio Quartet with guest artists performing on several tracks. Featuring predominately original compositions by Conticchio, this powerful new release reveals Perry’s broad skills as a composer and interpretive artist. Perry’s high-energy solos reveal an expressive mastery of jazz improvisation. When coupled with his quartet's tight musical interaction, “Speak your Truth” is a welcome and compelling addition to the collection of any jazz saxophone connoisseur.

5.0 out of 5 stars Talent Abound, May 14, 2008
This review is from: Speak Your Truth (Audio CD)
Wow! I usually don't write reviews, but this CD warrants the time to share my reactions in hopes that others will not pass up the opportunity to acquire a unique Cd while taking advantage of the remarkable deal offerred by Amazon. I have been listening to jazz for many years, and have an extensive collection with emphasis on all the jazz giants - the real masters. Rarely do I hear a new sound on tenor that comes close to the music on this CD. This is one talented player and gifted composer. He is a talent most deserving of wider recognition. He possesses a rich and full tone on tenor that matches any I've heard. The CD includes some fine soprano work as well, which nicely augments the power and the passion of his tenor.

The musianship of the other members of the quartet is also of the highest caliber, and nicely complement the playing of the leader. Lastly, and perhaps the most striking feature of this CD is centered in it's originality. I didn't feel the usual urge to make a comparison with other great players. Original talents, such as Mr. Conticchio need no such comparisons. However, as a part of this recommendation I will tell you what I told others in my early listening years when recommending the music of Booker Ervin - "regardless of what album you purchase by Booker Ervin, you will be treated to a real blowing session." Speak Your Truth by Perry Conticchio is one such blowing session. I encourage any lover of well played jazz to purchase this Cd with due haste.
