4.0 out of 5 stars Watch Me Install This Nice Clear Speaker, January 4, 2010
This review is from: SpeakerCraft CRS6 One 6 1/2" INCEILING SPEAKER (EACH) (Electronics)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
Length:: 9:57 Mins

This is a how to guide for installing this speaker in a ceiling. In my case, I installed it in a bathroom ceiling with audio streaming from an Airport Express. Even though this is just a mono speaker, I found it quite good for this purpose with excellent clarity. In fact, after comparing this, relatively expensive, speaker to the cheaper stereo speaker in my other bathroom, I have to say I now prefer high quality mono to low separation stereo from a cheaper speaker (in my case a Jamo). Sometimes you do get what you pay for.

The brackets made it quite easy to hold this speaker into my dry wall ceiling. I would recommend using a cordless screwdriver, just avoid over tightening the brackets. They are, after all, only plastic.

Sound is good, with of course little power on the low end, but excellent for what I use it for: music and podcasts, as well as its typical use as a rear surround speaker in a 7.1 home theater sound system.

I did make some use of the directional tweeter, although it is somewhat hard to find, just push on the plastic ring around the center cone and you can point the speaker over a narrow range of angles. I choose to point it at where I thought the listener would be.

4.0 out of 5 stars Use as a in wall center speaker review ..., February 19, 2010
By
This review is from: SpeakerCraft CRS6 One 6 1/2" INCEILING SPEAKER (EACH) (Electronics)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I was excited to try using the product as an in-wall center speaker for my surround sound system in my living room. I have been using it for a few months and thus far very happy with the speaker.

I was looking for a couple qualities.
a) ability to handle 75 Watts
- no problems here
b) paintable
- I don't think they advertise paintable but I was able to paint it to match my wall
c) in wall with ability to attach to sheet rock
- it uses a clip system that will grab on to sheet rock
d) wide sound projection to fill a room
- I was happy with the speakers ability to fill a wide room ( the room is about 30 ft wide and 20 feet deep )
e) good voice sound capabilities but without sacrificing low frequency response
- since it uses a 6 1/2" cone this has not been a problem. I was happy with the cross over circuit built into the speaker.

I admit that I used the speaker outside of the intended use. It seem to rise to the occasion nicely.

Why 4 stars? ... one reason .... I noticed that the pictures on the listing are incorrect. There are two pictures that show a small base and treble adjustments that are not actually on this model. I noticed that the description does not mention it so I believe its a simple issue of posting the wrong images of the product by the vendor.

I hope this short review helped a little. I always suggest reading a few reviews as I am not a professional reviewer rather I was solicited to review this product from Amazon. My intent it to provide consistency to keep everyone else in check. Thank you for your attention and happy gadget hunting.

Cheers

I installed 2 speakers in my basement uninsulated ceiling, they were easy it install, and provide great sound quality. The templates provides provided all I needed to cut the hole correctly, and the support feet hold it tight in place. I would highly recommend, this item

5.0 out of 5 stars Hold their own - great for low traffic areas, January 1, 2010
This review is from: SpeakerCraft CRS6 One 6 1/2" INCEILING SPEAKER (EACH) (Electronics)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
In my house I have a pair of CRS6 one's in the sewing room. In addition, I have a pair of AIM8 one's in my study. Finally, I have 6 MartinLogan Helos20's in various other locations - mostly in the bigger open areas of the home. All of these inceiling speakers have significant differences in sound and quality. The AIM8 and Helios20 are really in a different catagory as far as sound and build. They are superior in every way to the CRS6 one's. They are also nearly twice the price of the CRS6 model.

That the CRS6 one's are substantially cheaper is precisely what makes them a good speaker choice for low traffic areas where spending $250 to $300 per speaker just doesn't make sense. The sound quality is very good for this size speaker. I would never consider setting up a home theater system with a 6 1/2 inceiling speaker but for nice, clear, bright background sound these speakers come through.

Installation is easy once the wire is run. The mounting flanges are part of the speaker frame and it just a matter of tightening them down after the speaker is placed into the ceiling cutout. The CRS6 one's and the AIM8 one's are matched in sound reproduction and, since I have them mounted in rooms adjacent to each other, the transition between those two rooms doesn't attract your attention because of a difference in the speakers character.

There are several places, including one very big national electronics retailer, in my area that carry these speakers. I went and listened before I started cutting holes in my ceiling for these speakers. The fact that I did cut those holes is the true testament about the satisfying sound Speakercraft has built into these speakers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great speakers. Would be nice to at least have two., March 18, 2010

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
Will try to upload a video soon. I temporarily had it held on the ceiling, but I still feel it sounds better on the side of the wall, since my ears are on the side and not on the top (obviously), regardless these are in-ceiling speakers. I was pretty impressed. Just having this addition to the standard TV speakers made a huge difference in surround sound. The sound is very clear, almost too clear; the highs are definitely there. It really has turned my average TV set to a home theater feeling. If I had another one of these on the other side the of wall, it would be amazing. These connect via speaker wires, so you need a receiver to hook this up. Overall, I give it a 4/5.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great in-ceiling speaker - no complaints at all, December 10, 2009

I had a pair of Sonance Symphony speakers in the exact same size and color as this one. During a move, one of the speakers was damaged and I threw it out. I was excited to try this one out since I still had my one remaining Sonance Symphony speaker put away and was wanting to get another speaker so I could install them on my front porch.

If you plan to paint these to match your ceilings, you'll need to water your paint down a lot and use a paint sprayer to get a very light coat on the cover. The cover arrives detached for easy inspection of the speaker and painting purposes. Initially I installed the cover and then was able to easily remove it with the point of a sharp knife on the edge.

I haven't installed them yet since I'm moving, but I did hook them up to a small Sony receiver in our dining room and was able to compare the sound quality. Obviously the speakers require installation to fully realize the sound quality, but these were clearly better sounding than my like priced Sonance Symphony. However, comparing this speaker to my ten year old Sonance Symphony speakers is not really fair since the Sonance have received a lot of play. But, the SpeakerCraft do stand out as a very clear speaker, and well-made. They also have banana plugs to ensure a good speaker wire connection unlike the push tab speaker wire connectors like on my Sonance Symphony.

These speakers are sold and priced individually. Although I hesitate to recommend these for in-home use except if you prefer aesthetics to high-fidelity, I highly recommend these to business owners wanting to add music to their store or restaurant. We had six in-ceiling speakers installed in our business and the speakers blended in so well and afforded us the opportunity to place them in better locations then indoor/outdoor speakers could have been placed.

Some technical details on this speaker:

Impedance: 8 ohms
Frequency Response: 40 Hz - 20000 kHz
Warranty: Lifetime
Power Handling: 100 watts RMS (twice what my Sonance Symphony can handle)

Buyers, take note that the only the first picture shown in the pictures provided by Amazon in the product information is correct. The rest are of a different model. Also, the speakers are more off-white than white.

4.0 out of 5 stars A simple review, October 26, 2010
This review is from: SpeakerCraft CRS6 One 6 1/2" INCEILING SPEAKER (EACH) (Electronics)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I received this speaker as a demo in turn for this review. The biggest flaw is I was only sent one speaker. I have no problem with speakers sold individually, but it has made a full review of the product slightly more difficult. I was sent (1) CRS6 One and (1) AIM One 8.

Both performed very well, It was difficult to notice a huge difference between the two, but I slightly preferred the AIM One 8. The sound was a subtle difference, but seemed to be both riched and fuller. Of course since neither one of these were mounted into the ceiling, the sound could be totally different when installed.

I would personally recommend listening to any speaker before buying. In this case, listening to it installed in a ceiling would be better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worked Great, April 26, 2010
This review is from: SpeakerCraft CRS6 One 6 1/2" INCEILING SPEAKER (EACH) (Electronics)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I used this in my family room and bare in mind I did pay 85.00 to have this properly installed, even though it says you can do it yourself. I Loved it , it was great that I can play music in my family room from my livingroom where the stereo is. ( dont want people messing up my furniture anyway) The music came out clear as well as looking presentable as a fixture in the ceiling. The reason why I had it properly installed because if I sell my home home it will be something someone will like to have installed in their house, with the price of property values dropping this is one way to get a return..............

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I was able to install two of these CRS 6 One speakers with no problems. I'm not an expert in ceiling speakers, but I have to say sound-wise there are no issues whatsoever. The pivoting tweeter is nice because it allows a little more leeway as to where you're going to actually install it. Highly recommended, and the fact that they're reasonably priced makes it even better.
