Book Description

As the first of its kind for this course, THE SPEAKER'S HANDBOOK has established itself as both a reference for the individual speaker and an excellent textbook for use in the public speaking course. The new edition of the THE SPEAKER'S HANDBOOK continues to distinguish itself by providing another innovation - a new spiral bound, tabbed format. Each of the chapters can stand alone, enabling the speaker to consult only those parts of the book covering the aspects of public speaking with which they need guidance. The new edition also offers expanded and updated research and presentation coverage, a new text-specific CD-ROM with interactivity that guides students through the speech-making process, and links to the Web-based Speech Builder Express speech-outlining program.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This text has everything. THE SPEAKER'S HANDBOOK provides thorough detail into the speech-making process and allows students to instruct themselves even further with the out-of-class technology that is offered. Most impressive is the authors' effort to include sections on adapting to different types of audience members and how to practice effectively."

"This text provides solid and concise coverage of the topics and concepts important to the beginning public speaker. There is an excellent mix of theory and practice. The text provides excellent lists of dos and don'ts on many topics. The numerous in-text, point-of-use exercises coupled with online activities make this a well-rounded text for the public speaking classroom."

Sprague and Stuart's THE SPEAKER'S HANDBOOK is a handbook format text for public speaking that effectively narrows information and at the same time presents students the important aspects of public speaking. Theirs is a useful resource for beginning public speaking students and provides a concise glimpse at the basics of public speaking."

An excellent source for professors and people interested in Professional Speaking. It was the textbook for my professional speaking class and I found it an excellent source of reference in addition to excellent examples that helped me prepare my speech.

4.0 out of 5 stars Speech class text, January 4, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This text was used for Public Speaking in community college. I actually appreciated some of the lessons, as I have a professional interest in improving my speaking skills. The most helpful section is the impromptu speech lessons. This situation happens to almost anyone, whether at a wedding and you are asked to say something, at a meeting and your boss tells you to give a review of a project, or any other situation.

The set up is designed to make it easier to skip around, but it reads front to back, as well. Having no other experience with speaking skills, I found this book to be very helpful.
