One does not have to have a great deal of experience being a member of audiences viewing PowerPoint presentations to understand that it is very easy to make a presentation that is largely incomprehensible. This leads to an enormous amount of time that is not only wasted, but in fact is of negative value. Therefore, given that computer slide presentations are now the standard way that information is passed on to assembled groups, there is a critical need to upgrade the quality of the presentations.
That is the point of this book and it does the job. Starting at the fundamentals of how the human brain works and processes information, Gabrielle sets down some basic principles of how to organize slides and what is probably the most important, the upper limits of information on a slide. The presentation of this data does get a bit thick at times, detailed data about how to storyboard a presentation can get a bit tedious. However, tedious does not mean there is a lack of value, just that it can be difficult to move through.
Although the information is largely anecdotal, there is no question that one of the ways that operations of business can be made more efficient and less error-prone is to improve the overall quality of PowerPoint presentations. My "favorite" slide in the book in on page 144. In 2009, General Stanley A. McChrystal was the leader of NATO forces in Afghanistan and was attending a briefing where a diagram appeared on a slide. The diagram represented the complex issues of the war. When the slide appeared, General McChrystal said, "When we understand that slide, we'll have won the war." Although the audience burst out laughing, it was in fact a serious issue as the slide is incomprehensible. While most bad PowerPoint presentations are not over matters as serious as this, improving the quality of presentations is a way to increase organizational efficiency and this book will help any person willing to make the effort do that. Gabrielle uses that slide as an example of how to dismember a complex diagram into comprehensible sections.

From the first day I picked up the book, I began applying its principles. For companies who use PowerPoint to communicate, Gabrielle's writing is an extremely valuable tool to elevate the facts and key messages (and the hence the discussion) of important business decisions. I have used this book to coach corporate "story-telling" with my team, and will continue to frequently reference it when building my own presentations. Thank you for writing such a clear, easily applied guide!

Having spent my entire professional career in either consulting or corporate strategy, I found this book extremely useful. It demystifies the process of creating Powerpoint decks and provides practical recommendations grounded on fundamental human behavior science. It has been a challenging journey when the way most of us learn to create decks is through an apprenticeship model. The learnings are all based on your boss's or firm's deck style. Often, the basis of your promotion depended on your ability to quickly adjust and learn how to create decks. Many hours were spent on relearning and being told that its more of an art than a science. I wish I had this book when I first started creating decks. The book is well written and offers additional references if you choose to dive deeper into a particular topic. I like how I can quickly find what I need and have examples to make the book's recommendations real. It's changed the way I create decks and has transformed the way my team approaches them today.
