5.0 out of 5 stars a great CD to listen to in the car, July 12, 2008

This is a wonderfully satisfying CD - not as complex or orignal as some of his later CD's, but strong nourishment for the soul.

'Crucifixion' is classic Phil Ochs - brutal, complex, with sharp rough images. But while Ochs' version is rather bizarre and nauseating, Garnet Rogers turns the same words into a powerfully insightful, reverential piece, with the last 2 verses handled entirely differently. I often feel rather wrung out after listening to it - saddened, but also uplifted and understanding. It is followed perfectly with 'A Good Life After All' - the 2 songs so belong together, I am very grateful he did it that way. Dear Grandfather is also a deeply spiritual song, but done simply enough so you can enjoy it on whatever level you prefer. The other songs stand frequent re-listening, a great car CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars On a Easter Sunday morning..., April 23, 2011
This review is from: Speaking Softly in the Dark (Audio CD)
I'm listening to Jim & Jean sing Crucifixion having just heard Garnet's version of the Phil Ochs classic on WFMT's Saturday Night Live. While their version is considered classic, I'd have to say that the Rogers rendition is the stronger by far. No matter what the review, this CD is a necessary addition to the library of any folk music lover.

As the title says, this cd softly tells you stories.
Garnet Rogers' version of Chapin's Goodbye Again is amazing.
