5.0 out of 5 stars Extremly educational, October 20, 2001
This review is from: Special Delivery (Paperback)
I used this book to help educate myself and my husband for an unassited home delivery. It discusses homebirth with a midwife as well as hospital birth and the various aspects of both. How to take responsiblity for your birth and make sure that you have the birth experience you deserve. It goes over all aspects of birth from emotional to physical and how to prepare yourself for the optimum experience. The book throughly discusses the actuall birth and what to expect. It even covers breech birth and how a breech baby can be born vaginally. I would highly recommend this book to anyone serious about thier birth experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Resource for ALL pregnant women, November 28, 1999
This review is from: Special Delivery (Paperback)
I use this book to teach my childbirth classes and the couples always end up buying the book to keep. I teach couples that are birthing at the hospital and at home. Both find the information very useful and readable. I trained to be a midwife with the author-she is one of the most kind, gentle and wise women I know.

5.0 out of 5 stars A superb resource for those seeking natural childbirth, April 30, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Special Delivery (Paperback)
While the content of this book spans all common birth locations from hospitals to home, it really focuses on educating thoroughly and taking responsibility for your own birth experience. Includes lots of good tips on labor management and is very helpful for those considering home birth.

5.0 out of 5 stars The book's title says it all!, January 14, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Special Delivery (Paperback)
I highly recommend this book to those who are either pregnant or considering pregnancy. Although the book was written with home birth parents in mind, it also makes an excellent resource for parents who are hospital-bound and want to be informed of their options. Ms. Baldwin covers topics such as the history of birthing practices, the safety of planned homebirth, pregnancy nutrition, and choices in prenatal care. She also provides excellent information on the spirituality of pregnancy and birth, complications and emergencies, tools for labor, and the postpartum period. If you are looking for something to supplement "What To Expect" this book is it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Plenty of spirit, plenty of spine., September 3, 2011

Honorbright (sonoma, ca United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Special Delivery (Paperback)
I loved Ina May Gaskin's classic "Spiritual Midwifery" and always will be grateful to her for her ongoing work in childbirth education, but for my own two homebirths I felt far more prepared after reading Rahima Baldwin's book. While supporting the spirit her book also has a lot of spine: she takes a clear look at possible complications and how they're handled. I was very grateful to have a hard-working team of midwives and doulas assisting with my second home birth, involving as it did eleven days of off-and-on back labor with a posterior presentation---their support was vital to my survival of that challenge, and a hospital and OB by contrast would have had me on the C-section table two weeks before what ended up being a wonderful, trouble-free vaginal delivery once the midwives got that big baby turned. I would not have wanted to try that birth unassisted. But no matter how you end up actually delivering your baby and what sorts of support you may end up needing, Special Delivery can help you face the possibilities confident and well-informed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Guide to Informed Birth, November 30, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Special Delivery (Paperback)
This book is one of my top 5 guides to pregnancy, childbirth and newborn care. I can't recommend it enough, as a 1st time mom reading this book and using the forms in it has been an invaluable resource. The author, Rahima Baldwin, is a compassionate, experienced and intelligent writer who designed the book to prepare women and their partners for natural home birth, though I am using a birth center and find it equally helpful in that setting. Buy it and get informed!
