Amernick is a pastry chef who has worked at Jean-Louis at the Watergate, among other Washington restaurants, as well as at the White House. Here is a collection of her favorite, most-requested desserts: Turtle Pie, Chocolate Truffle Cookies, Caramel Trifle. Although the work of a master baker, many of the recipes are uncomplicated, and the recipe notes are very clear and unintimidatingly brief. The only disappointment is that there are not more desserts here: only 39 recipes in all, and 13 of those are for the basic components. Nevertheless, most pastry collections will want this.
