Jack DeJohnette - Danilo Perez - John Patitucci

Born in 1942, Jack DeJohnette is widely regarded as one of jazz music's greatest drummers. In his early years in Chicago scene, he led his own groups and was equally in demand as a pianist and as a drummer, collaborating with most major figures in jazz history, such as: John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Ornette Coleman, Sonny Rollins, Sun Ra, Jackie McLean, Thelonious Monk, Bill Evans, Stan ... Editorial Reviews

Special Edition a band with revolving membership and an incredible cast of soloists was one of the most sophisticated vehicles for Jack DeJohnettes all-around talents. This set brings together the albums Special Edition, Tin Can Alley, Inflation Blues and Album Album, underscoring the excitement of invention and possibility one can hear in this era of DeJohnettes career. The recordings reveal him as an artist in touch with tradition even as he sought the cutting edge of the day, paying homage to his jazz heroes yet experimenting with new sounds. There are echoes of old New Orleans grooves and Swing-era big bands in this collection, as well as material crafted with the techniques of 80s pop singles; there are ambitious suite-like compositions, and there is spontaneously lowdown rhythm & blues.

This is a great ECM reissue -- all four of Jack DeJohnette's Special Edition bands' recordings from 1979 to 1984, now all on disc in one box. DeJohnette is a great drummer, in the line from Philly Joe Jones and Max Roach to Elvin Jones and Tony Williams. His drumming is one of the attractions of these recordings, but the Special Edition bands are primarily a showcase for his compositions.

DeJohnette is best-known to some for playing with Miles Davis on "Bitches Brew" He replaced Tony Williams in Miles' band at the time of Miles' turn toward electric fusion, and was part of the so-called "Lost Quintet" now documented on a new Sony live set. He is also well-known as the drummer for Keith Jarrett's Standards Trio with Gary Peacock on bass. But DeJohnette is also an excellent composer and bandleader.

These four Special Edition recordings come from a time in the late Seventies/early Eighties when the avant-garde was reincorporating tradition. Henry Threadgill formed his Sextett, while David Murray formed his first Octet. When I saw the Henry Threadgill Sextett live at the Chicago Underground Fest in 1981 in a loft on the west side after the Jazzfest there were posters of Ellington and Mingus on the walls. That was a radical statement at the time!

The first self-titled Jack DeJohnette Special Edition album was recorded in 1979 and released in 1980. It features the smoking front line of David Murray on tenor and bass clarinet and Arthur Blythe on alto, two of the hottest young players of the day, with Peter Warren on bass and DeJohnette on drums, piano, and melodica.

Jack Dejonnette does not always receive the accolades he deserves, As a pioneer in modern jazz, he has played with most everyone who was anyone, here, a collection of the albums he released as the frontman in his own group, Special Edition. Uniformly great music. Hours of great listening. If you don't own any of these albums separately, well worth the price.
