From the Back Cover

You'll find detailed information on the make-up and purpose of each of 109 different tests, including subtests, scoring, diagnostic patterns if any, and specific strengths and weaknesses, all conveniently organized into the following sections:

  • Wechsler Scales of Intelligence. This section covers the three most commonly used individual intelligence tests in education, which measure a variety of intellectual areas and compute a Verbal, Performance and Full-Scale IQ.
  • Intellectual Assessment Measures. Nine different tests measuring skills such as perceptual organization, processing speed, and long and short term memory skills are described here, including the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale, Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children, Columbia Mental Maturity Scales, Slosson Intelligence Test-Revised, and five others.
  • Achievement Assessment Measures. 31 measures of reading, spelling, writing, and math achievement are covered, including tests such as the Gray Oral Reading Test-3, Test of Written Language-2, Diagnostic Word Patterns, Key Math-R, and Wide Range Achievement-3.
  • Perceptual Measures. The 14 tests in this section help diagnose process and modality strengths and weaknesses and include measures like the Bender Visual Motor Gestalt Test, Test of Auditory Perceptual Skills-R, and the Woodcock Johnson Psychoeducational Battery-R.
  • Language, Psychological & Social, and Adaptive Measures. This section describes 25 tests in the areas of language, behavior, emotional and social development, such as the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test-3, Conners' Parent and Teacher Rating Scales, and Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scale.
  • Early Childhood, Hearing-Impaired, Occupational & Physical Therapy, and Bilingual Tests. The 29 tests in this section are concerned with a variety of potential disabilities and include measures such as the Denver Developmental Screening Test-R, Carolina Picture Vocabulary Test for Deaf and Hearing Impaired, Purdue Perceptual Motor Survey, and ESL Literacy Scale.

In addition, the Guide thoroughly covers the various stages of evaluation, interpretation, diagnosis, prescription, and remediation and offers up-to-date guidance on gathering information, the parents' role in the assessment process, understanding children's behavior during testing, writing and developing IEPs, and implementing remediation techniques in the classroom.

The valuable appendices at the end of the Guide give you the names, addresses, phone and fax numbers of test publishers…test references guides by category and by name…a glossary of test & measurement, special education, psychological, and occupational therapy terms…and special education abbreviations.

As the authors point out, "With the proper tests and their proper interpretation, many problems exhibited by students with special needs can be more rapidly and appropriately addressed. As with any event, early diagnosis and intervention can mean all the difference in an individual's life"

1.0 out of 5 stars Special Educator's Complete Guide to 109 Diagnostic Tests, October 6, 2006
I found this book to be very useful and practical to own, several years ago. The problem is that all the tests have now been updated, and it is now out-of-date. The authors changed the title of the book when they created the updated edition to: 'The Special Educator's Comprehensive Guide to 301 Diagnostic Tests'. Their new book, copyright 2006, does contain the newest version WISC, (WISC-IV) as well as other updated achievement tests (WJ-III,WIAT-II, etc.) reading tests (GORT-4,CTOPP, etc.) and added more assessments descriptions. I think people are purchasing this older version of the book, thinking it is the newer version, because Amazon has listed the publisher date of this first book, listed as August 1, 2005, and does not listing the book copyright date of 1998. Don't buy this edition of the book. The newer edition is under a new name, new cover, and title: 'The Special Educator's Comprehensive Guide to 301 Diagnostic Tests, which I would recommend.

1.0 out of 5 stars Out-of-Date, June 28, 2006
Although this book contains useful information, many of the tests have been revised/updated since its publication. If you are looking for general information, it might suffice for your needs. If you need specific up-to-date accurate edition information, pull out the test manual and a cup of coffee to do your own research.

5.0 out of 5 stars Parent of special children with special needs who want to understand tests used to assess your child and determine services, March 17, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I am a parent of an Autistic child who is tested on an annual basis by our Dept. Of Education. The testing or assessments are what had been driving or determining what services our son received from the district or state. We all know that the child's individual needs are what should drive the services. I discovered that tests that my child was being given were not measuring even in part the areas that he actually needed assistance with. I also discovered that school districts can teach to particular tests, thus, child does wonderfully and therefore we should cut his services back. Please make yourselves aware of what the tests strengths are and pitfalls. Understand your child's needs and by all means DO question the tests that the school uses. Unless you have this book to refer to you have no idea as to what the actual tests are measuring and if the tooks are even appropriate for your child or outdated etc. I strongly recommend this as a resource in any parents library who has special needs children in the public school system.
