The color is true for the first few washes. If you just put conditioner in your hair and skip the shampooing to every other day....the dark red will last longer. I Can't do that with my hair, but that is fine because this color fades out to a nice hot pink that I like. So...hint..if you wanting hot pink hair that will last...buy this and wash your hair til it fades out. It won't take long. I bought other hot pinks and they fade out way to quick.

Special Effects Hair Dye first won me over last year when I tried their Deep Purple. A couple of months ago, I decided I wanted to go wacky with my hair color once again, and thought a brilliant bright red would do the trick. After asking around, I decided Candy Apple Red would be a good color to try.

My sister helped me out in bleaching my hair prior to dyeing and applying the color. The color soaked in pretty quickly as she applied it, and for a while both of us were a little afraid we wouldn't have enough! Fortunately she was able to stretch it enough to cover my entire head of hair. (For the record, my hair is quite short.)

Post-rinsing (it took a LONG time to finish rinsing, and to be honest I didn't so much "finish" as I did "stop" - the run-off could have continued for hours!), my hair was a very deep red. So deep it looked almost black. When it dried, it was a bit brighter but still very deep red.

Subsequent washings brightened the color significantly. At this writing it has been nearly 4 weeks since my hair was dyed, and the color is still quite vivid. I will need to redye soon because I have close to an inch of root regrowth; if that were not the case, I wouldn't feel the need to redye for probably several more weeks. True fading is quite minimal. There are a few spots in my hair where it looks more dark pink than red, but you really have to look closely to find those. The only spots with significant fading - where parts are almost back to the original bleached blond - are in my "sideburns," the little wisps between my ears and my cheeks. I'm guessing that has more to do with the hair there than the dye.

I have heard that red tends to not want to stay in the hair as well as other unnatural dyes, but that has definitely not been the case for me with this red.
For a long-lasting and vivid pink-based red, you would definitely do well to buy Special Effects' Candy Apple Red.

i love special effects! i have burgundy wine, blue mayhem, and blue velvet. those colors stay for me for at least a month before they look gross and hay like (i have black hair with streaks that have been bleached to platinum blond. i just color the blond parts. and i wash my hair every day). however, candy apple red stays for about a week. maybe 10 days.... i dunno why. maybe the blue pigments stay better. so i wouldn't blame the brand or anything. just something to think about if you're lazy and don't want to color all the time like me! i'd rather get a darker color like burgundy wine which is my FAVE and then let it fade to the reddish pink
