4.0 out of 5 stars pleasant enough., February 23, 2006
This review is from: Special Forces (Audio CD)
In reality, I would like to give Special Forces a 3.5, but since I do have an overall favourable impression of the album, I went for the 4, rather than the 3. There are very few moments of sublime beauty here, yet it remains steady. The high point is in the center of the album, maybe track 5...it is the one that begins with rapid chiming sounds. I'll give that track a 5 on its own. Something I don't like here is the singing... It sounds very similar to Thom Yorke when he is doing that mush-mouthed stream-of-conscious high-pitched mumbling. Which, I love Thom Yorke, of course, but this is the only singing style applied by Julian Fane. It gets old.

But, this album is pleasant enough. It's good driving music for sparse winter days, as the album cover implies.

4.0 out of 5 stars A more fuller version of RadioHead, October 3, 2007
This review is from: Special Forces (Audio CD)
Title says it all. This album was well done by Fane, even though certain songs may hit you back sounding almost like RadioHead, there's still a difference but that's the only reason why I held back 5 stars. Cleary Fane did some wonderful work with ghostly sounds like M83 but fuller sounding tracks then RadioHead. Any fans of M83, RadioHead, or Dntel need to check this artist out.
