Review

"The short stories in Special Forces are a satisfying reminder that aggressive masculinity and brute force in military service - and the serendipitously tight and lonely spaces soldiers find themselves in - continues to be fertile ground to stimulate the gay erotic imagination.

--Tony Valenzuela

"In this bold, one-of-a-kind anthology, military men do ask and do tell all--every last steamy power-charged detail. Camoflauge has never been sexier!"

Rachel Kramer Bussel, Editor, Bottoms Up and The Mile High Club

Product Description

Wherever a man slides into his BDU's and shoulders an M16, there's another man looking to take both off him — and people who want to read about it. These sexually charged stories show military men in every branch of the service getting down. Special Forces is set in the heat of battle, public or private, where fear, urgency, and uncertainty lead to unexpected intimacy and release, where anger and terror fuel desire and attraction. The seasoned authors here, some of whom served in the military themselves, do not shy away from the hard realities of the fight, but allow it to heighten the eroticism. The collection includes Jack Fritscher ("Wild Blue Yonder"), T. Hitman ("To the Victors Go the Spoiled"), Simon Sheppard ("Stockholm Syndrome"), Jay Starre ("Between Shots Fire"), and many more.

1.0 out of 5 stars Complete disappointment, November 1, 2009

This collection of short stories is, I'm afraid, a complete disappointment, to put it mildly. With one, lonely exception, the story Friendly Fire by marquesate, the contents of this collection of so called gay military erotica are sloppily written at best and just about unreadable at worst. Ridiculous story lines, purple prose, gratuitous violence and rape that seems mostly unmotivated by plot ... I haven't found a collection of erotica yet, that is quite as unerotic as this.

3.0 out of 5 stars Some great, some not so much, November 27, 2009

Two of the stories in this collection really stand out. Friendly Fire by Marquesate was my favorite. Just the right mix of sex and romance. My purchase was justified by this one story. I really enjoyed Wild Blue Yonder for its frank appreciation of the maleness of its main characters. The remainder of the stories were mediocre. D.C. Blues was actually really disturbing. I would skip reading it if I were you.

4.0 out of 5 stars 3.5 for some of the stories, April 20, 2010

This review is from: Special Forces: Gay Military Erotica (Kindle Edition)
Overall, this read did what it was supposed to, delivered gritty, hot military erotica. Some of the stories were better than others, I'll leave it to other readers to decide which were best for them. Every story, honestly, had some nugget of goodness about it, some more than others. I wouldn't rate any of the stories less than 3.5 stars, but truthfully, some of the stories did drag the collection down from an overall 5-star to a 4.

If you're looking for cushy, squishy, girlie m/m romance, keep looking. This is flesh-slapping, out in the battlefields raw sex. Some of the stories have more of an emotional connection than others. They vary from the Civil War to indeterminate future conflicts in alternate histories.

This was money well-spent, in my opinion, and while I won't re-read some of the stories, the collection is, for me, a keeper overall.
