Complete disappointment,

This collection of short stories is, I'm afraid, a complete disappointment, to put it mildly. With one, lonely exception, the story Friendly Fire by marquesate, the contents of this collection of so called gay military erotica are sloppily written at best and just about unreadable at worst. Ridiculous story lines, purple prose, gratuitous violence and rape that seems mostly unmotivated by plot ... I haven't found a collection of erotica yet, that is quite as unerotic as this.

Two of the stories in this collection really stand out. Friendly Fire by Marquesate was my favorite. Just the right mix of sex and romance. My purchase was justified by this one story. I really enjoyed Wild Blue Yonder for its frank appreciation of the maleness of its main characters. The remainder of the stories were mediocre. D.C. Blues was actually really disturbing. I would skip reading it if I were you.

Overall, this read did what it was supposed to, delivered gritty, hot military erotica. Some of the stories were better than others, I'll leave it to other readers to decide which were best for them. Every story, honestly, had some nugget of goodness about it, some more than others. I wouldn't rate any of the stories less than 3.5 stars, but truthfully, some of the stories did drag the collection down from an overall 5-star to a 4.
If you're looking for cushy, squishy, girlie m/m romance, keep looking. This is flesh-slapping, out in the battlefields raw sex. Some of the stories have more of an emotional connection than others. They vary from the Civil War to indeterminate future conflicts in alternate histories. This was money well-spent, in my opinion, and while I won't re-read some of the stories, the collection is, for me, a keeper overall.

CONTAINS SOME SPOILERS
I am more in agreement with the reviewer who thinks that his/her money were overall well spent on this collection. I certainly do not consider this anthology a dissapointment, but of course I agree that Marquesate's story was once again the very best. How does she manage to write such hot erotica and wonderful believable soldiers I do not know, but I am very happy that she does. Get it for "Friendly fire" even if you will not enjoy any other story in this collection, but of course I am biased, I am a fan of this writer. However her story again is NOT the only one I enjoyed in this collection, just do not look for too many happy endings here, it is erotica not romance after all. And the fact that Marquesate made it possible for their relationship to continue, while leaving it wide open, makes me love her story even more. So, what other stories did I enjoy? Simon Sheppard "Stockholm Syndrome". It was painful and disturbing to read (and brutally hot too I will admit), but I was pleased that at least author called a spade a spade and did not portray a touching love story coming out of the rocky beginning. (Sorry, am having flashbacks to some yaoi mangas with this theme that I wanted to throw against the wall). I enjoyed this story. I also actually really liked DC Blues by Jamie Freeman, although I also agree that it is very disturbing and ends tragically (most likely). Just feels like a very realistic extrapolation of what the future of America may look like if right wing extremists will come to power and take their designs to very extreme. In a flash is a story of lust and love and saving one's life in war between Italian man and a Jewish man. This is the story with one of the happiest ending in the anthology and I loved it. Some stories were forgettable, some were disturbing and upsetting, but as another reviewer said I will let you decide which ones you will enjoy, I am just pretty confident that you will enjoy at least a few. |
