Editorial Reviews

Japanese pressing of 2004 debut album includes one exclusive bonus track ''Waiting For Joel' (Remix Of 'Little More Oil' by Kid 606). Reggae, jungle, hip-hop, industrial, folk, dub, and jazz, spun together by a Black American émigré to Spain who, before making his debut record, released mix after mix of barrier- breaking dance music. P-Vine. --This text refers to an alternate Audio CD edition.

3.0 out of 5 stars Underwhelming debut from an overwhelming talent, November 10, 2004
This review is from: Special Gunpowder (Audio CD)
As a turntablist, DJ Rupture is up there with the brightest talents of his generation, charting hidden links between all manner of different genres - from reggae to raga, Dead Prez to drill'n'bass. His is a heady brew of unexpected stylistic juxtapositions, so - in some ways - it's hardly surprising that his debut album as a recording artist, "Special Gunpowder", should be so darn eclectic itself. Rupture flits all over the place: one minute dancehall, the next Latin House, then it's on to dub, trip hop, electronica and some cracked folk that wouldn't have sounded out of place on the "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" soundtrack. Impressive enough, but Rupture falls short of making any of the genres he dabbles in his own - what's sorely lacking is any unifying voice and, though the tracks on offer are consistently competent, they're seldom remarkable. It's ironic: while there's no doubting Rupture's abilities, he's a lot more distinctive when spinning other people's records than when he's playing his own.

2.0 out of 5 stars good try but..., June 6, 2005
By
This review is from: Special Gunpowder (Audio CD)
This was a good try to make an acleptic disc, but... The result wasn't as nice as it could be. Song's are bored. They don't get you lintenig to them more than 30 seconds. The styles covered on the disc are very wide ranging from noise to latin hip-hop. Hard to fit all of them on the same disc! this is acheved in a good way... The problem is that all the songs are at the same level, and it's not too much high.

Listen just as an example of what can be done combining styles on he same production. Not as a reference for anything. In one Word: Borred. Just turn around and look for something else. The money is not rewarded with this cd.
