Valuable Reference for Planning a Special Needs Trust,
By
This review is from: Special Needs Trusts: Protect Your Child's Financial Future (Paperback)
This book is designed to help readers set up their own special needs trust without an attorney--and you could do that with the resources provided, but I expect most readers will prefer to use a professional to establish an estate plan with the special needs trust as an important element. Whether or not you plan to use an attorney, however, this book is an invaluable resource for anyone considering a special needs trust.
I have attended seminars on Special Needs Trusts, and my wife and I have had an initial meeting with an attorney to set up a trust for our disabled daughter. As a result, I came to this book with a well-developed idea of what could be accomplished with Special Needs Trust. Still, I learned a great deal from this book. There were several issues related to handling of assets within the trust and the management of housing expenses that became much clearer to me after reading this book. Reading this book helped form important questions that we will be exploring with our attorney, and helps us understand in greater depth what she will be doing for us. In this way, this book is helping us maximize the value we get from our attorney's services.

I set up a Special Needs Trust for my son a couple of years ago; it was not a satisfying experience. The lawyer did not explain the process well, and I was left frustrated and poorer.
If I had first read this book that I easily found and purchased at Amazon.com, I would have walked into the lawyer's office with confidence that at least I would have known all the basics in setting up the Trust and the questions to ask. As it was, I didn't know what I didn't know, and that was a distinct disadvantage. I would recommend this book for anyone thinking of setting up such a Trust. Read it first before contacting a lawyer.

Nolo's Special Needs Trusts book is precise, concise, and very informative. Well organized, it reads fast and easilly. It's very practical too. We are using and depending on it's content. I even corrected the overseer of our trust. Perfect!

Very basic guide,
This review is from: Special Needs Trusts: Protect Your Child's Financial Future (Paperback)
I bought this book hoping to find some guidance on establishing a Special Needs Trust. It is very basic and most of the information can easily be found on the internet. The Special Needs Trust Administration Manual is a much better reference.

Excellent introduction to special needs trusts. Excellent discussion on how to find a good attorney and why that might be difficult. Note: This book discusses creation of a Third Party Special Needs Trust. This is a trust that is set up by a parent, grandparent or other with funds that do not belong to the special needs beneficiary. A First Party Special Needs Trust is a different animal. It is used for assets that belong to the Special Needs beneficiary. Proceeds from a law suit or a direct inheritance require a First Party Special Needs Trust. The big difference is that a First Party Special Needs Trust is much more difficult to draft and the trust must reimburse the state when the beneficiary dies. Be sure to use an attorney who has a copy of the Special Needs Trust Handbook ($330.00!)

The book is excellent. I had borrowed 2007 edition from the library, but I wanted my own copy, so I bought it from Amazon. Anyone with a special needs child should have this book.

I have already set up a special needs trust using a lawyer, but I wanted to read more on these types of trusts. I would say this is a valuable resource for subsequent or co-trustees. It contains some information about the practical aspects of setting up, and administering trusts for those who are not professionals.

Excellent book - provides guidelines for why, when, who and how. Even though we will use a lawyer, the advance prep should save us money, as they charge by the hour and we have a plan of what we want and who will handle instead of discussing and make these decisions "on the clock".
