About the Author

Scientist by day, paranormal romance-urban fantasy author by night, M.L. Ryan has many stories rolling around in her head, and she finally decided to write some of them. She prefers literature that isn't saddled with excruciating symbolism, ponderous dialogue or worldly implications. She also doesn't like plots so reliant on love at first sight that it makes her feel like her head might implode. She lives in Tucson, Arizona with her husband and teenage son, four cats, two dogs and two adopted desert tortoises.

I ordered this for my iPad, as I was checking my e-mail and bemoaning the fact that it was the only bedtime reading I had. Just finished a book and love to read before falling asleep. Stayed up all night to finish Special Offers. I loved this book! In fact, the book I finished just before was Janet Evanovich's new Stephanie Plum novel. This reminds me of that kind of book - clever, different, fun. Books like Special Offers are my reward, my "reading candy." I won't re-summarize the plot, as the Amazon summary is accurate - but it is quite a bit more complicated than indicated. The main character is irreverent, funny, a little insecure, and sympathetic. Readers from the southwest will receive an additional bonus in the author's descriptions of Tucson and the surrounding southwestern desert and mountain scenery. Special Offers is very well written, and not all "fun" books are. I find it very distracting to read a book that doesn't flow or uses poor grammar. And the plot of "Special Offers" is different, which keeps one turning the page. Too often, these less expensive (okay, pretty cheap as far as the cost of books goes!) offerings are a disappointment; poorly written or edited and/or lacking a captivating plot, I usually end up regretting the expense of even a dollar or three for them. Ryan could have charged a LOT more for this book. This is the first in a series, and I'm looking forward to more!

M.L. Ryan gives us a range of characters in Special Offers. The smart, sarcastic female protagonist; the hot, understated male interest; the womanizing, cocky male; the quintessential villain; the loyal friends; and some characters that end up surprising you. A colorful bunch of characters that were extremely fun to read about and really helped round out an already great story. The only issue character-wise that I had was that Hailey considered herself a 'plain jane', that was a little bit of a downer, but other than that she was an awesome character.

"The truth you can deal with, it's all the speculative crap that makes you nuts"

Oh! And I can't forget her cat who was initially named after a Norwegian female swashbuckler. That was an added plus since I'm obsessed with my Norwegian heritage.

There was a lot of hilarious witty banter (mostly between Hailey and Sebastian) that greatly added to the entertainment of my reading experience. Do you ever wonder what people think when you start to laugh out loud while reading? Something that cannot be helped while reading Special Offers!

" 'Hailey, I'm really sorry, but Harrison has some sort of stomach bug and he's currently curled in the fetal position on the bathroom floor moaning 'kill me', over and over' "

The concept was absolutely amazing and so unique. It was a little twisty, but without being overly complicated. Basically, just enough (complicatedness) to draw you in and keep you hooked. I must admit that I was initially a little disappointed in the subtle romance that happens between Hailey and Alex, but then I came to the realization that Special Offers is, in fact, the first of a series. I should have done a tad bit more research, huh?

Lucee's Review of Special Offers by M L Ryan

This is the first time I've struggled when writing a review. As I've never had a book draw me in so completely yet at the same time frustrated me to distraction. When I read the blurb on Special offers I was intrigued and excited to read it.
I was not let down by the plot, the embodiment of the storyline or the characters who were enthralling.

Hailey: The smartass who is possessed by the essence of Sebastian a being from another realm; is hilarious and had me in stitches throughout the entire story. She was also vary endearing and serious when she needed to be. She showed remarkable strength of character and determination when faced with adversity. Hailey has some warm, caring a loyal friend who lookout for her and their personalities marinate very well with her own.

Sebastian: The opinionated mystical being who invaded Hailey's body courtesy of her Amazon special offer Kindle device; was charming, courteous and amusing. His interaction with Hailey were side splittingly funny and had me laughing out loud. Equally there were scene between the two which were sincere, touching and heartfelt. There was something very moving about their relationship which the reader can fully appreciate.

Alex: The mystical charming eye candy from another dimension that every girl dreams about. A colleague and close personal friend of Sebastian. An inevitable love interest for Hailey. Who would have to be dead to pass up that opportunity! Alex is loyal caring and attentive. He explains to Hailey how it came that Sabastian possessed her body and what it was they needed to do to get him back into his own body. Which Hailey appeared to take very well?

I hate giving bad reviews. It literally hurts my body and I feel like drinking a whole lot of hard liquor when I know I have to post a, dare I say, negative review.

However, reading this book was like forcing myself to color with my child. I know that might sound really mean to some of you but I hate to color. I can't think of anything more boring than having to sit and color for even fifteen minutes.

I couldn't find anything I liked about the characters. This book started out, via the blurb, with so much promise. I mean a supernatural theme about the 'special offers' on the Kindle releasing a 'spirit'. I was like YAY! I'm all over this.

Then I started to read it.

There was no tension, the characters were all one-dimensional cut outs that never latched onto me emotionally for me to care!

You can't scare, or impact a reader unless they really care about the characters.

It read like a college thesis paper. "She got out of bed. She put up on her shirt. She then put on her pants. She walked out of her room. Once she was out of the room she walked down the very long hallway..." You get where I'm going with this.

The writing didn't latch. There was no hook. Even when we are introduced to a really hot male character... yeah. He was boring too. I tried so hard. I pushed and marched on, hoping that I would be like, "Oh, there it is!" That just didn't happen and it was disheartening. I hate to say that the writing just wasn't 'pretty', but it wasn't. It was very blah and it jarred the reader from one scene to the next.

I understand that I am in the minority here. I did read all the other reviews, and it was one of the things that encouraged me to read this. This is purely taste.
