Book Description

July 1999
The development and expansion around the globe of airborne, airmobile, intelligence-gathering and commando forces requires a parallel expansion of dedicated and specialized aviation support. And just as militaries increasingly turn to aviation, so too do law enforcement, emergency medical, firefighting and search-and-rescue organizations.

This full-color book examines a number of these special operations aviation units, both past and present, which have provided, and continue to provide, such specialized support. Featured are the aircraft, unique equipment and technology, training, and the survivability and airmanship skills necessary to crew such aircraft. Also included are special operations aircraft of tomorrow, like the Bell/Boeing V22 Osprey, Boeing/Sikorsky RAH-66 Comanche, and Westland/Agusta EH101 Merlin.

This review is from: Special Operations Aviation: The Men and Machines of the Elite Units (Paperback)
Overall a good read, highly detailed and well written accounts of Special Ops Aviation Units and Missions. One concern is the information divulged in the Chapters regarding Search and Rescues; downed pilot recovery/rescue includes info. on "authentication process", this subject matter should NOT be made public knowledge- certainly NOT at such a detailed level. Operational security SHOULD have been a concern with the author, compromising information towards the safety of downed pilots has NO place in public view. -BZ
