3.0 out of 5 stars Not the Book for Field Treatment of Battle Wounds
I'm sure this is a great book for many purposes, but if you are looking for a manual on the treatment of gun shot wounds this is not it. I was fooled by the Special Operations label. Also, it is available through the very user friendly Government Printing Office for $59.00.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is the heat!, December 29, 2002

The best wilderness/expedition medicine field guide bar none. I have had a chance to speak to most of the Special Forces Medics who have been in Afghanistan and the one thing we all agree on is that this book is the best thing that the military has put out ever for SF medics. I carried this book along with a Sanfords and Pocket Pharmicopia and ran sick call on my guys and the locals and didn't need any other references. The only negative is that this is some heavy book. Not something that you would want to carry on your ultra-light backpacking trip. Great for base camp or vehicle travel though.

The Special Operations Forces Medical Handbook is absolutely the best medical handbook that I have found to date for remote medical support operations. Besides being very compact, which makes the manual a very functional travel companion, the book is packed with an incredible amount of useful medical information. If you are a remote medical practitioner, this is a medical reference manual that you will not want to be without.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must!, October 11, 2002
This review is from: Special Operations Forces Medical Handbook (Book Only Edition) (Ring-bound)
This is the best book the Army never issused me. It has everything from bug bites to dental emergencies. I've been an Army medic for seven years and I've learned more from this book than from my MOS school. This book is an absolute must have for every medic.

IF I COULD HAVE ONLY HAD THIS BOOK 3 YEARS AGO MY LIFE WOULD HAVE BEEN SO MUCH EASIER. THIS BOOK IS ORGANIZED, COMPACT AND FULL OF DIAGRAMS AND CHARTS. EVERY DISORDER OR DISEASE THAT YOU COULD IMAGINE IS COVERED IN THIS BOOK AND IS WRITTEN OUT IN SOAP FORMAT TO MAKE YOUR JOB EVEN EASIER WHEN IT COMES TIME TO DOCUMENT. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR, PAY THE 70 DOLLARS AND GET THIS BOOK. I USE IT DAY IN AND DAY OUT. I HAVE LEARNED MORE FROM IT THAN ANY SCHOOL THE MILITARY HAS SENT ME.

Other reviewers are telling you to go somewhere else. You don't need too. This version of the book is a collectors item. The new book is updated in 2008 by the US Government. You can find it here for the same price ($59 or less). Search for "Special Operations Forces Medical Handbook, 2nd Edition" [Ring-bound] by Warner D. Farr (Editor), Leslie H. Fenton (Editor), Robert T. Clayton (Editor), Gay Dews Thompson (Editor), Holly Hardison Pavliscsak (Editor). If you search by Steve Yevich it should come up too.

Not only is the content in this book exceptional (especially for you survivalist types), the best part is the writing. The style editor must be incredibly talented. I happen to know he recently used some information from this book when he had to relocate his own shoulder...

The "Special Operations Forces Medical Handbook" is an excellent reference for the advanced tactical medic. The handbook's introduction contains an advisory which reads: "Be advised that the Handbook has limited application outside of the SOF context and is not intended for anything other than use by highly trained SOF medics."

This is an amazing book that easily fits in your aid bag (easy is relative of course). It will cover anything you run into and (hopefully) a whole lot more. If you are getting this for use in an aid station you might want to supplement it with Tintinali's Emergency Medicine Text Book, HUGE book, but tons of in-depth info that they couldn't possibly cram into that already full flip book. If you are deploying, or know someone who is and is in the medical field this is THE book to get them
