Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

This police procedural, the second in the Badge of Honor series, ostensibly concerns efforts to nab a serial rapist at large in Philadelphia, but the real subjects here are the interior lives of police officers and the department politics that complicate their jobs. Unlike the genre's often embittered flatfoots who are more like their quarry than the people they serve, Dugan's ( Men in Blue ) cops, zealous recruits in the freshly minted Special Operations division, are boyish, sexy, respectful, and always and unambiguously the good guys. The plot contains practically no overt violence or graphic sex--usually the stock-in-trade of contemporary cops-and-robbers yarns--and chief characters are credibly fashioned. Pleasant enough on its own terms, the book lacks the meticulous detail and shake-'em-up style that most procedural fans expect.

5.0 out of 5 stars Badge of Honor Series, November 22, 1999

The whole Badge of Honor Series was absolutely wonderful and I'm a woman. The author seems to understand bureaucrats and the "system."

I have one problem and that is the women in his novels are usually too tough. Once in awhile that's OK, but every one of them are the same. Wish he'd change them once in awhile. AND his hero's fall in love with great regularity with the same type of woman. That's my only complaint.

Soften em up Griffin.

Of course, Mr. Butterworth wrote these books before his very popular "Brotherhood of War" and "The Corps" series were published...but still, as a cop for over 20 years, it was hard to relate to such outdated procedures and attitudes. Once I got past that, I did enjoy seeing how his characters set the stage for their doppelgangers in Brotherhood of War...Peter Wohl=Craig Lowell, and Matt Payne = Geoff Craig, etc. If you are looking for excellent, accurate police procedurals, read the Harry Bosch novels by Michael Connelly, or anything by T. Jefferson Parker. Those two really get it right.

5.0 out of 5 stars special author, September 20, 2011
I have all of WEB Griffins books and rate him along with Wilbur Smith as my all time favorite author. His sagas span several different action themes, but they are all either military, police or intelligence services. The author has residence both in Texas and Argentina and has spent a great deal of time with our military so he uses his familiarity with these settings and people to cast a very nice spell in his work. My wife also enjoys the books so I would say they are suitable for all readers.
