5.0 out of 5 stars Another Big Break Records success - 2010 Remaster July 30, 2007
Format:Audio CD
Firstly, because Amazon insist on combining all reviews for a product, regardless of the media type or date of release, this review is an amendment of my 2007 review of the Wounded Bird release which was transferred automatically by Amazon to this BBR CD.

This is the second CD release of the album "Special Things", the Pointer Sisters 1980 effort for Planet Records, the first being from Wounded Bird in 2007. While the track listing on both issues is the same, the sound quality and packaging of the 2010 BBR release defies comparison, other than to say that it is brilliant, whereas the Wounded Bird CD was merely adequate.

The third of six albums for Richard Perry's Planet label, "Special Things" marked a deliberate attempt to create a mainstream pop album, with potential chart hits. Their previous release, "Priority" (1979), was rock at it's finest, yet produced no successful singles, and was something of a surprise to their non-plussed fans who had bought "Energy" (1978) (the first Planet Records release, and designated P1) because of the high charting cover of 'Fire'.

Richard Perry brought in songwriters with a guaranteed hit-factor, such as Tom Snow & Cynthia Weil, Burt Bacharach & Carole Bayer Sager and Peter Allen. With high production standards the results were predictable. "He's so shy" was a massive hit, and other tracks such as "Could I be dreamin'" also did very well, once more establishing the Pointers as bankable artists.

5.0 out of 5 stars FINALLY... A REISSUE BEFITTING THE ALBUM! December 4, 2010
Format:Audio CD

Special Things is a classic soul album from 1980 that was overlooked in the wake of the bigger, Poppier 80's albums the group had its greatest success with. The vocals on this album are truly wonderful and this edition sounds great, looks amazing and has fantastic liner notes and interviews. For those who bought the disappointing Wounded Bird reissue three years ago, I say upgrade with confidence! Bonus track Movin' On has no vinyl crackling this time!. A classy album portrayed at it's best.

Beautiful in every way.

I am so happy with this CD!!!

Ten out of five!

5.0 out of 5 stars Justice had been served October 17, 2007
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This was my very first Pointer Sisters album that I purchased. This was back in 1981, when "He's so shy" was still hot on the radio lists. Much to my surprise there were other excellent songs in this album. "We got the power" and "Could I be dreamin'" became my instant favorites. I'm very impressed with the quality of this CD realease. I only hope that other "old school" Pointer Sisters recordings like "Priority","Happiness"
and "So excited" will be released on CD soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfection Achieved July 21, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
How do you describe an album that is simply perfect? Every song is perfectly chosen for the Pointer Sisters and the ladies always deliver vocally. HE'S SO SHY is a classic, THE LOVE TOO GOOD TO LAST is hauntingly pretty, SAVE THIS NIGHT FOR LOVE and WE'VE GOT THE POWER soar and EVIL is a killer. A masterpiece.

This was one of my favorite Pointer Sister albums, next to "Black and White," when I was a kid. Before I even knew that the Pointers started out as a quartet and before the monster smash of "Breakout," SPECIAL THINGS was my intro to the Pointers. And all because I loved the hit single "He's So Shy," which I saw them perform on the tv show "The Love Boat."

"He's So Shy" was just one of the gems on this album. Other stands out are "We've Got The Power" and "Evil," which were never included on any of the numerous compilation albums on the Pointer Sisters. All of the songs are good, though.

I don't know why some reviewers are complaining about the remastering job done by Wounded Bird Records? It sounds ok to me. Of course it's not 32-bit remastering, but it beats listening to my warped cassette tape of this album.

Why it took so long for SPECIAL THINGS to appear on cd is beyond me. I'm just glad it's finally out!

********************** UPDATE APRIL 2011-BIG BREAK RECORDS RE-ISSUE **************************

Although it's double-dipping for me, I bought the Big Break Records (BBR) re-release of SPECIAL THINGS and I'm so glad I did. The BBR version is the ONE to get!

I appreciate Wounded Bird Records initial release, but that was because I didn't know what I was missing.

BBR has done a remaster and reissue the way it should be done! With loving care, Big Break Records remasters SPECIAL THINGS and it sounds amazing! You can clearly hear the percussion, horns, and the Pointer Sisters' voices clear as day; it's like you're in the recording studio with them. I can't believe how good it sounds.
