Review

Mesmerizing French star Isabelle Huppert, with a history of playing sexually transgressive women, is at it again. You can't take your eyes off her. --Stephen Holden, The New York Times

Writer-director Jeanne Labrune affords Isabelle Huppert, arguably the finest French screen actress of her generation, yet another splendid role in the complex, compassionate and endlessly illuminating 'Special Treatment'... Impressive. --Kevin Thomas, LA Times

Huppert is astonishing. Her abandon and willingness to try anything give the movie a bracing unpredictability. --Patrick McGavinTime Out Chicago

Product Description

With Isabelle Huppert, Bouli Lanners, Richard Debuisne and Sabila Moussadek

In this darkly erotic drama from cult filmmaker Jeanne Labrune, Isabelle Huppert stars as a high-class prostitute named Alice who serves up sexual fantasies for her clientele, from schoolgirl innocence to S&M. Fed up with the seamy underbelly of French masculinity, Alice crosses paths with Xavier, a neurotic psychoanalyst facing a marriage crisis. The two quickly realize their professions share a thing or two in common as they navigate the overlapping worlds of psychotherapy and sex therapy.

The great Isabelle Huppert must surely be one of the boldest, most fearless actors at work today. In Jeanne Labrune's provocative "Special Treatment," Huppert tackles yet another of her fascinatingly complex creations as an aging escort looking to make some changes in her life. The film's hook is that the screenplay juxtaposes Huppert's illicit interactions with similar scenarios of a psychotherapist at work. It is an intriguing idea that the two professions share a commonality that you might not expect, and it was a concept that I thought had a lot of possibilities. The other central character, who shares a concurrent plot line in the piece, is a psychoanalyst struggling in a troubled marriage. You know it is only a matter of time before the two stories will collide, but what will the resultant meetings bring to each party? As I waited expectantly for the answer, I'm not sure that I found the resolution to be particularly enlightening or to serve as much of an emotional payoff.

Playing as a character study, as well as a slight satire, the movie sets up a number of clients for each of the story threads. Unfortunately, for my taste, the interactions tended to veer into the territory of cliche. Some are oddly humorous, some play it straight, some are meant to invoke danger--but, for whatever reason, none were particularly believable. It's not a reflection on the actors, who perform admirably, but instead on a script that seems to want to be far more edgy than it actually is (one of the therapy patients is a cross dresser, Huppert's clients have her act up a variety of expected sexual fetishes). But with Huppert on screen, I was always willing to see where this tale was headed.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mixing fun with duties July 27, 2012
Like a "My Man ( Mon homme )", this story is focused on a sex-worker trying to change a life in her forties.
High educated, Geisha-style-providing service female succeeded with a help of psychiatrists.

3.0 out of 5 stars "Just Okay" Huppert Film + comment on bonus features February 22, 2012
My fellow Amazon reviewer K. Harris has provided enough detail about this film - and thoughtfully - did not give away the ending. I concur 100% with K that, while Huppert is the reason to see the film, it's the writer/director's fault that the film doesn't gel.

One thing not pointed out yet is the DVD includes an "Interview" with Director Jeanne Labrune, which is a TEXT interview about the film and it's characters. In some screens the print may be a bit small to read. Labrunne comes across - at least for me - as defensive in her feelings re: Psychoanalysts and the fees they charge.

I hope this adds some helpful information.
