Given Que's track record, I was surprised to find that Using Active Server Pages is a pretty decent piece of work. The information is relatively accurate and the book exposes the reader to the full range of Active Server Pages programming issues, although the coverage of each topic is quite shallow. I get the impression that the authors don't have much practical experience with Active Server Pages and actual industrial-grade, production web sites. There are also chapters on Microsoft's new Transaction Server , Message Queue Server, and Management Console. These are not complete enough to be used as a guide to implementation, but at least help the reader to understand why these products exist and what they are good for.
This book would be a reasonable introduction to Active Server Pages for a reader with little or no programming experience but some understanding of simple databases and HTML. Technically sophisticated readers will be more satisfied with WROX Press's Professional Active Server Pages. -- Ray Duncan, Dr. Dobb's Journal -- Dr. Dobb's Journal
Unlike most of the competition, this book will assume more basic knowledge of VBScript and standard web page creation. This will allow the book to go farther and deeper into technical topics surrounding Active Server Pages
Most of the competitive books center on Windows NT and IIS. This book will expand the coverage to include using Active Server Pages on Windows 95 using the Personal Web Server
The technologies being used to create Web pages continue to evolve. This book presents the reader with an up-to-date look at how to create dynamic, personalized web sites for both business and personal use
This will be one of the first book to focus more on implementing Active Server Pages rather than on the theory behind working with Active Server Pages. This additional coverage will be seen in the 850+ pages (verses the closest competitor at less than 600 pages)
Includes new functionality available with the release of Microsoft's Internet Information Server 4.0
Covers creating Active Server Pages for Windows 95 with the Personal Web Server as well as for Windows NT 4 with IIS

GREAT BOOK!,

This book stands alone among the horde of ASP books available! Even though there are a couple of obvious typos, this book covers it all! It ties every part of the development aspect together and servers as a great guidebook and reference book. I give the other ASP books to my junior level developers to learn from - but my senior staff also turns to this book as the go-to ASP reference. Definitely money well-spent!

I am a certified MCSE. I am also currently pursuing an MSCD certificate. I do admit that some sections of the example codes in this book are not perfectly clear nor precise, however, the ideas and concepts of these example codes are pretty straight forward and self-explainatory. The book is very well organized and easy to read. It covers a vast topics in ASP, including DCOM, ADO, VB, InterDev, ODBC, MTS, ActiveX, Ms Queue, and also SQL Database -- basically, if all the previous topics mentioned above needed to be fit into 700 pages, Scott Johnson did it RIGHT, you can't ask for more. If you are working with MS SQL server 6.5 and IIS 4 server, and that you are following the exercises in the book like I had, you will be shock to realize at the end that you have built an n-tier internet and extranet front-end database application! Excellent book.

A very poorly written book. Do not buy,

I suppose that the first clue to the number of errors in the book is the fact that they were unable to get the author's first name spelled correctly.Be warned that the ASP examples in this book are riddled with errors. I've had to spend an inordinate amount of time figuring out the correct syntax of commands and make sense of the many inconsistencies in the book. It's also interesting that Que books is unable to spell even the easiest of terms correctly (e.g. "OLE" is spelled "OEL" in some places; "ASP" is spelled "APS" is some places, etc.) Save your money & your time; you'll find that the WROX books are edited and proofread much better.
