Amazon.com Review

Special Edition Using HTML 4, Fifth Edition delivers holistic coverage of the key discipline of Web-site design. Author Molly E. Holzschlag combines the technical aspects of HTML and assorted technologies with general design methodologies and concepts.

The book begins with the fundamentals but quickly moves on to cover more advanced concepts, such as cascading style sheets (CSS), JavaScript, Dynamic HTML, and XML. This coverage is not comprehensive but shows you the basics of these technologies and illustrates their importance. From here, the author takes you into the details of Web-page design, presenting the HTML language in context with overall design goals.

The author goes on to show how to embed streaming audio and video, Java applets, and other multimedia packages, such as Macromedia's Shockwave, Director, and Flash documents. The book also covers server concepts such as Common Gateway Interface (CGI), Active Server Pages (ASP), and database connectivity, and includes an entire section on the complete process of designing and implementing a Web site.

Additional resources include a comprehensive reference section on HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and VBScript. The companion CD-ROM includes a number of demonstration versions of tools and browsers, including HTML editors and FTP utilities. --Stephen W. Plain

5.0 out of 5 stars Special Edition Using HTML 4.0, Sixth Edition, March 17, 2000
I purchased this book because I had the 5th Edition and a colleague bought it off me. Fortunately I couldn't get version 5.0 and had to buy this one. I found both versions to be extremely powerful reference books with excellent explanations on cutting edge technology. It's such a great reference I take it everywhere - I tested all references to CSS1 and CSS2 and produced extensive examples in different browsers for useability. I have just finished designing over a 1000 page set of Web guidelines for designers at basic, intermediate and advanced level for a big company and this tome has proved invaluable for cross referencing. My co/writer and I, don't refer to the title of the book but simply quote 'Molly' - as far as were concerned she can't do no wrong. I thoroughly recommend the book and will continue to support the Author in future publications. Money well spent! especially at Amazon's Price.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great way to learn HTML, March 28, 2000
This is the book that taught me HTML. It took me from barely knowing what a table is to building complex sites by hand. It doesn't (and can't) cover absolutely everything in-depth, but the writing is clear and the examples are descriptive. I couldn't have asked for a better teaching tool, and I still refer to it almost every time I code.

4.0 out of 5 stars "A Must-Have Reference for HTML 4", July 12, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Special Edition Using Html 4 (Paperback)
I read this book from cover to cover. After reading this book you will know: Basic HTML. How to use CSS. What is XML, VRML, DHTML, CGI...(major web technologies). How to desing Web sites. How to publish you Web site to the Web. You won't know: Advanced HTML. How to make forms. You will have: A great reference to HTML 4 and CCS.(The most valuable part of the book, about 200 pages.) A CD with many shareware programs mentioned in the book. This book is simply too thick. By reading it, you can see how the author tries to make it longer. If you need a good HTML 4 reference, buy it. If you want learn a lot of HTML, pick another book. If you got all those little questions about the computer screen, resolution, browsers, colors, graphic files, scanning for the web, if you want to make your Web site look good on as many platforms and browsers as possible, buy this book.
