The Final Word on Using Word 2000,
This review is from: Special Edition Using Microsoft Word 2000 (Paperback)
I have been an intense Word user for years and colleagues, clients, and friends have often called upon me to answer their questions about how to use Word more effectively and efficiently. It wasn't until I purchased this book that I discovered that I had only cracked the surface of this powerful tool and that Bill Camarda knew the territory completely and laid out a complete map to the entire application. For example, over the years, I have spent untold hours in document review and editing that I always felt should be able to be done much quicker than the way I had been doing it. Within two hours of purchasing the book I found very expedient solutions to problems that have plagued me for years. I have found a multitude of other time and money saving tips as I have continued to read my way through the text.
This book is easy to read, easy to understand, and easy to use. Compare that with any other application manual or book that you have purchased and I think you will agree with me that this book is one great tool.
One of the things I really like about this book is the projects that Bill has created to help the reader really internalize the material as he presents it. By doing the projects I know that I will be able to do similar projects in the future without having to refer back to the book.
Another great feature of this book is that, on the enclosed CD, it includes a free copy of a piece of software for which I was going to buy Woody's Office Power Pack. Since the book didn't cost that much in the first place, the bundling of the software was a real bargain.

Ships With The Kitchen Sink Included,

Although I've never been a big fan of Que Books because of their somewhat verbose and difficult to understand diatribe, I was really shocked when I picked up a copy Special Edition MS Word 2000. Perhaps a more accurate statement instead of picked up a copy would be: I rented a crane and hoisted up a copy of this 1400+ page gorrilla. This book is actually quite useful because when you're done reading it, you can take it to your local bowling alley and let it serve as a surrogate bowling ball. Forget joining a health club to lift weights, just pick up a copy of this puppy, turn a few pages....you be in pain for weeks! All seriousness aside, this is perhaps the best book ever written on Word2000. Camarda really did his homework and it shows. It is gratifying to actually buy something these days and acquire some value along the way for your hard earned bucks. Everything you can possibly think of to do with Word is included and thoroughly explained; the Net, templates, intelligence, etc... You won't get through this book eating a Cheeseburger on a boring Saturday night, believe me. Prepare to do some serious study and look forward to several weeks of focused study. Nicely laid out, good color contrast to prevent eye-strain...in depth explanation...you won't be sorry you bought this book.

Excellent source of Word information,

I have been a serious Word user for years and also work as a software tech support specialist for a state government office (100+ staff). Our office migrated from WordPerfect Office to MS Office 2000 shortly after it debuted. I acquired this book (and several others in the series - Access, Excel) to learn about the new features and to have as a reference for staff. Bill Camarda has done an excellent job researching and writing this book. Certainly the best that I have ever used (and I have used many!). Even staff who normally shy away from large tomes like this 1400+ page monster have come back over and over again to borrow it. Same with my Excel 2000 and Access 2000 books from this same Que series. So now I am ordering several copies of each of these volumes to put in our reference center, so I can get MY copies back! An excellent reference book both for new and intermediate/advanced users. I highly recommend it.

Good Average User Book,

I liked this book quite a bit. It is a good "user's guide" to Microsoft Word 2000, and it is very thorough. The coverage of all the bigger topics (Mail Merge, Web Pages, Formatting) is pretty much right on point and easy to follow. My only concern is that the book wouldn't be good for beginners (Word 2000 for Dummies by Dan Gookin is best in this category), and wouldn't cover the needs of advanced users (Learn Word 2000 VBA Document Automation by Scott Driza is best in this category). All in all, it's a great book - very easy to read, and very comprehensive.

Excellent as a reference or in-depth tour of Word,
By Kimberly Lyle-Wilson (Marietta, GA USA) - See all my reviews

I considered myself a Word expert, but in this book I immediately uncovered a number of features that make my Word life easier. I have solved some of my long-standing Word problems and I have started to imagine ways I can use some of Word's more powerful features. Word can be so frustrating sometimes, but this book really alleviates that, making me appreciate Word's good side again. I choose to use this book as a reference. It is well organized, clearly indexed, and includes helpful cross-references throughout the text. There are also hundreds of tips, notes and cautions, though visually these are so numerous they are distracting. I think a person could also read this book cover to cover as an excellent in-depth tour of Word. I haven't explored the CD yet, but I am enjoying the book so much that I am willing to risk a muscle strain to lug it back and forth between home and office.

Buy This Book, You Won't Be Sorry,
By Heath McKay (Boston, MA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Special Edition Using Microsoft Word 2000 (Paperback)
This is a superb book for Word users at any level. Typically users evolve as they begin to use the more difficult and useful feature, this book stays with you every step of the way. The grey shaded tips are particularly useful as they provide helpful hints to make usage easier. The book is logically formatted and well-worded, Bill Camarda's style is conversational rather than pedantic. Thumbs up!

I am surprised.,

I am always reluctant to buy third-party books because they often end up taking up space and collecting dust in my office. This is because I use them to learn a few techniques and discover other ways to use the software without using the book. With that in mind, I checked this book out of the library to learn a specific technique. As I used the book to create a complicated merge document, I also used Word's online Help and found that the book explained the process more accuratly and simpler. Now it's due back to the library and I realize I will need to refer to this book a lot more than the dust collectors that I have. (One of them is an older Que book.) I am ordering this huge, informative book today.

Exactly What I Need!,
By Karen Haley (No. CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Special Edition Using Microsoft Word 2000 (Paperback)
This book is proving to be exactly what I need in order to go from being proficient to being ADVANCED with MS Word. The lay-out and design caught my eye immediately; I'm really impressed with how the manual is structured. The writing style is friendly and uncomplicated. I was pleased to discover that Bill included details and instructions which were omitted in the Word '97 version. So far, I've found complete and accurate answers to every question I've had. I love the projects at the end of each chapter! And the "Tips from Bill Camarda" are very, very cool.No wonder Bill's name moved from the bottom right-hand corner of the Word '97 book to the top left-hand corner of this Word 2000 book! He deserves the recognition and the accolades. I'd sure want my name in big letters on the cover if I wrote this book!

Good book but I am still looking for more,
This review is from: Special Edition Using Microsoft Word 2000 (Paperback)
This book was good but I am still looking for a book for very serious Word users that want to know the limitations of Word as well as the possibilities. This book read a little too much like Word 2000 could do just about anything (this is hardly the case). I did like the sample projects at the end of each chapter. The projects were simple, applicable and illustrated some good points. I did learn many things from this book, but in developing some fairly sophistocated templates I found a lot of deficiencies or omissions with the book (eg: I thought more could be said about templates). I think this book is great for a general Word user but a Word developer needs more.

This book has no compittion as of today. Plus, this books covers pretty much everything you want to do using Word2k. The writing style is excellent and it is also very useful to have the entire book in PDF.I strongly recommend this book to anybody who is remotely interested in using MS-Word2000. Let's give a big hand to Bill for doing such an excellent job in producing this mammoth book in just under 1400 pages. |
