Book Description

December 18, 1998 Special Edition Using
The major enhancements in this edition over the previous edition will be coverage of the Microsoft Transaction Server and integration with Microsoft SQL Server--the two most important additions in version 6. Coverage of the enhanced debugger, profiler, and Year 2000 compliance checker will also be important to this audience. The new debugger and Year 2000 checker will automate much of the tedious FoxPro debugging process from the past. This book is aimed at the experienced, professional FoxPro developer--unlike most of the competition. This book will provide a "visual development" foundation for those programmers moving to Visual FoxPro, but will not provide basic introductory FoxPro and database coverage for brand new users. Experienced users will find the "Techniques from the Pros" provide plenty of in-depth reference and examples. An additional section will cover integration with other Visual Studio applications--particularly Microsoft SQL Server.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book, May 6, 2000

This book proves that online buying with associated reader reviews is not necessarily effective! I was put off buying this book through Amazon by the reviews. When I saw it in a book shop I immediately realized that it is the best book on VFP 6.0 that I have seen. It is consistently easy to read and informative.

I have been programming in Foxpro and VFP for many years and feel that this book has the breadth of coverage to enable me to fill in many of the holes in my knowledge.

I think that some of the other reviewers who gave a bad rating were new to VFP. They should realize that VFP is not a beginners database product and a book of this breadth of coverage cannot hope to satisfy a beginner to VFP.

1.0 out of 5 stars Using Visual Foxpro 6, December 7, 1999

There's only one word to describe this book. BAD! A beginner will never learn much because the examples, at least in the beginning of the book, don't relate to anything. If you don't know foxpro code, you just copy routines that are meaningless as there is no explanation of the code. I could rant and rave for a long time, however, all I'm saying is this is a very poor book that does not even have a listing of the foxpro commands so you can check up what the code is. Don't waste your time or your money.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dissapointing read, November 24, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Special Edition Using Visual FoxPro 6 (Paperback)
I found the book particularly hard to follow, with a lot of disjointed areas. For example, early in the book, the author talks about the main window, with a command window inside that, further down the same page it refers to the command window as the main window and goes on to describe the objects within that window. However as the author has swopped 'main' and 'command', utter confusion results. I would advise people who need a Foxpro primer not to get this book. There appears to be no succinct overview of the Foxpro package to enable you to hang any threads from. It reads rather like a mystery book, where all is only made clear at the last chapter, unfortunately I never got there due to the number of mistakes and confusion generated before that. This quite expensive book was a total waste of my time and money.
