Editorial Reviews

Thirty years after their Elvis Costello-produced debut came out, these punk-era ska gods played this Wolverhampton Civic Hall show for a rabid hometown crowd. This was their first concert filmed in 28 years; their set brims with energy and classics: A Message to You Rudy; Too Much Too Young; Gangsters; Concrete Jungle; Nite Klub; You're Wondering Now , and more plus a bonus documentary!

I was really thrilled to see this 30th anniversary show finally available on dvd. The setlist is great with nearly every track you would expect. The band sound fantastic. Brad's snare and Horace's bass creating a great ska/reggae riddim. Excellent horn section, especially trombone. Neville and Lyndval still have great energy and Terry vocals still have that unique tone. I highly recommend this to any specials fan. Would have been nice to have Jerry be part of the reunion and while he is the main writer of these classics, the rest of the band more than make up for his absence. Makes you crave for some new material, but I'm not sure whether that will happen.

I admit that I'm a huge Specials fan and if you are at least a moderate fan you'll be amazed at this DVD. I could not imagine that the performance, the sound, the video, the everything about a 30th anniversary tour could be this good. The band is so 'tight' that a friend of mine and I spent a few moments watching closely to see if this was lip-synced to recorded music. It's not ... it's just that good. I mean the songs sound exactly like the recorded album versions .... no diversions ... no alternate versions ... no songs you've never heard before.

If you liked The Specials at all you'll love seeing them live. I never saw them live and watching this sure made me wish I had been in the crowd at this concert - those that were there danced non-stop.

This is the best concert DVD I own - by a mile.

This is a fabulous dvd with an entirely amazingly energetic Specials lineup (minus that wet-blanket Jerry Dammers). It's not an "oldies" show by far--every song sounds fresh, and the band are tighter than ever. I compare this dvd to an "English Beat" one I purchased in 2005 which was just horrible-- no vibrancy, and what THIS dvd offers is: great editing, camera work which highlights the energetic performance, and a nice docu as well. When I first heard The Specials (in fact I saw them on television, this being the start of the video-age) the US music scene was ABBA, AC/DC and a recently murdered John Lennon. It was horrid. The Specials kick-started my youth; and while Terry Hall said at the time that he didn't want to end up "like the Rolling Stones, playing 'Honky Tonk Woman'" 20 years down the road-- I'm sure that young Coventry kid can now appreciate that this band have a classic sound, and can still pull off a live show that would have been matchless even 30 years ago.

Pretty much everything is just right with this DVD: The mini-documentary is charming as the band's fans effuse about the joy the Specials' music and the Two-Tone culture and political transcendence brought to the dark Thatcher-era climate in England 30-years ago. I recommend watching this before the actual performance. The concert itself is well-staged and the performance is awesome. Terry Hall is detached (Where did you get that *blank* blank expression ...on your face?), but the rest of the band sell the songs as they dance about with unrestrained enthusiasm. The songs remain true to the originals ...only better. The snare drum pops and the toms thunder, the bass drives with authority, while the guitars happily decorate everything nicely. I think I like seeing these (30 year later) live performances of the Specials' repertoire better than listening to the studio originals --and that's not always true. After all, thirty years later we're still all just "working for the rat race."

The Specials reformed for a series of 30th anniversary concerts in 2009, with the original band line-up minus their principal song writer, Jerry Dammers (keyboards) and a brass/horns trio replacing Rico Rodriguez and Dick Cuthell.

This dvd proves that The Specials have not lost any of the musical integrity and energy which made them famous in their heyday. It's an oustanding performance and worth many repeat viewings. The dvd also includes a mini documentary on the tour and the fan's reactions to the concerts. A fun and very watchable addition.

I highly recommend this dvd to anyone with a passing interest in The Specials or ska itself.

Good concert. Well filmed and the sound is excellent. They have only improved as musicians...though Terry seems to not be all there...his voice is better than before. Jerry Dammers is missing, which is too bad.

Still, a fun show for all.
