From the Inside Flap

New revised and updated edition!

When Carol Schroeder and her husband founded Orange Tree Imports twenty-five years ago, they had no retail background whatsoever. With drive and determination, they taught themselves everything they needed to know—merchandise display, record keeping, inventory management, and the myriad other skills that make up a storeowner's craft. In Specialty Shop Retailing, Carol shares this experience and wisdom so that you too can grow your business into an award-winning success. This newly revised edition also brings you the latest in technological trends, advertising, hiring, and customer service.

More than just a lively memoir filled with helpful hints, this comprehensive guide covers every aspect of opening and operating a retail store, from choosing a location and store design to niche marketing, advertising, and customer service. Carol Schroeder supplies more than two dozen ready-to-use forms, and her tutorials on visual merchandising, store design, and advertising are supplemented with numerous photographs, sample ads, and witty cartoons. The book includes an extensive glossary of retail terms and a bibliography of additional reading sources for help on special topics such as writing a business plan and managing employees. In response to reader demand, this revised and updated edition offers new information on advertising in new venues such as cable television; the effects of e-commerce on small businesses; customer service trends and programs; and hiring and retaining employees in good times and bad.

Like any wise businessperson, Carol Schroeder doesn't rely entirely on her own experience. From interviews with dozens of the most successful specialty retailers in the United States and Europe, she culls practical solutions to some of the field's most daunting challenges. She addresses major strategic issues, such as the pros and cons of buying into a franchise, negotiating a lease, competing with big box discounters, and diversifying product mix. Many of these solutions are built on straightforward, simple techniques that can be used in any store setting.

Whether you're a seasoned retailer with many years' experience or a novice just beginning to plan a store, Specialty Shop Retailing will inform and guide you with up-to-date information, practical advice based on the author's experiences, and simple strategies for establishing yourself and finding success.

More About the Author

My varied career as an author and translator has one uniting theme: helping people improve and enrich their lives. I am excited to have the opportunity, together with Ann Ehrlich, to introduce students to medical terminology through our series of textbooks published by Cengage. I know how important a good grounding in medical terminology is for all those starting a new career in the allied health field, and believe that our texts do an excellent job helping students gain these essential skills efficiently.

My own career in retailing is the background for Specialty Shop Retailing: Everything You Need to Run Your Own Store, now in its third edition with John Willey and Sons. (A second edition in Russian is also currently in the works.) I invite those interested in retailing to read my weekly blog, www.specialty-shop-retailing.com, and to subscribe to my bimonthly podcast by that name. Together we can help your business succeed!

4.0 out of 5 stars Provides an illuminating look into a mysterious business., July 20, 1997
By A Customer
You have to be in retail before you can appreciate how mysterious and unpredictable it is. Schroeder overviews the basics of getting started, the basics of retail finance, designing your store, buying and merchandising, staffing, customer service, and advertising and promotion. Each of these chapters provides just an overview, although I found her chapter on staffing to be particularly helpful. The book also provides a very good literature review. There are numerous books in the bibliography that will make interesting reading. My only regret is that Schroeder didn't provide more of her own experiences. She has a fascinating story to tell. How a fresh college graduate can purchase a failing retail chain and turn in around almost immediately is beyond my abilities. You are left wanting to know more of her story over her 20 years of experience. How did she really build a small store to $1.5 million in annual sales? Its fun to read a book written not by a professional author, but by a seasoned retailer who is willing to help others. She has made a tremendous contribution. I was very happy with this purchase. Although I have one store currently, have had a store in the past, and want more in the future (hence this purchase), I didn't really expect much new information. Not only did I get some great hints, but the book was so well written that I literally grabbed it every minute I could after I received it to keep reading. I finished it in less than 2 days! Very thorough, and suitable for a new or more experienced merchant. Impressed at author's willingness to share her goof-ups as well as her successes. Great value for the price (not one of these cheap, vague pamphlets you see all over the place). Definitely a keeper!

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good book but Retail Business Kit for Dummies better, June 16, 2003

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Specialty Shop Retailing: How to Run Your Own Store Revised (Hardcover)
Let me start by introducing myself and explaining an apparent potential conflict of interest...

I'm a CPA in Redmond, WA and am always on the lookup for resources that I can suggest to clients. I have quite a few independent retail clients and so was interested in this book.

I also happen to be the author of QuickBooks for Dummies and Quicken for Dummies.

Okay, all that said, I think Carol Schroeder's book is a pretty good one. The book has lots of good information for the independent retailer or the prospective independent retailer. (As you can see, I gave it four stars!) But I really think that the Retail Business Kit for Dummies is a better book. There's more information in the Dummies book and it's an easier read.

One final comment: Before you say to yourself, "Hey, he's just recommending another Dummies book, that's bogus!" let me point out that both the Dummies series of books and "Specialty Shop Retailing" are published by the same company, John Wiley & Sons.

Maybe the thought I'll leave you with is this: If you're interested in learning more about starting and running a successful retail store, read Retail Business Kit for Dummies first... then, if you want more information and have time for another book, read Specialty Shop Retailing. You will get good information in the Shroeder book that isn't in the Dummies book.

Steve
