4.0 out of 5 stars You ought to try the Gil Mayo series, December 28, 2011
I recommend this book as a very good installment in the Gil Mayo series. The plot about two local deaths that initially seem unrelated but really are connected sounds mundane but is actually rather absorbing. The story-specific characters are well drawn, which is part of what makes the ordinariness of this plot acceptable. The protagonists (Detective Superintendant Mayo, Detective Inspector Moon, Detective Sergeant Kite, et al) could be a little more developed as characters, but it seems to be Eccles desire not to make them bigger than her stories. Mayo, a strong and assured man, remains the best character, with Abigail Moon still seeming to be a token woman added to the series. It would be interesting to see her do something really significant to justify all the talk about how she is on the fast track. Sergeant Kite adds a dose of blue collar to the story, which is a realistic touch.

I like this series. It isn't anything dramatic or creepy or exotic, but Eccles does a nice job of making murder and its investigation in one British city engrossing. While one might find this book enjoyable on its own, I recommend reading this series in order, so as to get to know the main characters from the beginning.
