5.0 out of 5 stars Quick, Affective & Healing, October 28, 2010
This review is from: Specific stretching for everyone (Spiral-bound)
Active Isolated Stretching (AIS) capitalizes on the body's natural physiology to give maximum results. Athletes from around the world travel to get training / treatment from author Aaron Mattes including these stretches. I've seen clients with significantly limited range of motion gain full range of motion in one treatment. This method also increases blood flow to the area, thus promotes healing and healthy soft tissues.

I've trained with Aaron to enhance my massage therapy practice. I recommend this book to my clients. AIS and trigger point therapy are two key modalities yielding great success with my clients.

One weakness about the book is that some of the stretch sequences are out of order in the body of the book. To help streamline workouts, I recommend writing the number of the following exercise and the page number where it's found. For example, the hip and back exercises are scattered throughout the book. Because some of the exercises may double for two groupings of stretch sequences, I include a code for the group I'm working. So, hip and back number one and two are on the same page. I use a fine point sharpie marker and write H&B1 and H&B2 in the margins by the headings, below H&B2, I write H&B3, pg 32. Then repeat the same type of notations on each of the pages until all is complete allowing me to quickly turn to each exercise without flipping back and forth from the index to the exercise pages.

Flexibility without strength can make joints vulnerable, so be sure you're keeping muscles both strong and flexible. See Active Isolated Strengthening: The Mattes Method for insight on this.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best book for stretching, May 10, 2010
This review is from: Specific stretching for everyone (Spiral-bound)
As a massage therapist, I learned these techniques to perform on my clients. I often refer them to the this book so they can continue to take care of themselves at home. This is an excellent stretching technique and the book clearly shows how to perform the stretches. I highly reccomend it.

A very detailed manual to help you stretch every part of your body. It shows the latest technique to improve flexibility. Like every area of science and health, there have been many discoveries and advancements over the last several years. The old technique of "hold your stretch for 30 seconds" doesn't work, and never did. I always wondered why I could never get flexible. This book shows you how.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great supplement to therapy, November 7, 2010
This review is from: Specific stretching for everyone (Spiral-bound)
I'm working with a therapist trained in thes method and the book is very helpful for me to keep up with my work at home. Without a therapist to guide you, this might not be easy to follow but after doing the stretches with guidance, the pictures are a good reminder of how each is done.

I had a licensed Active Isolated Stretching specialist in Florida. I have since moved from Florida and have not yet found anyone who uses Aaron Mattes' technique.

While I'm searching for an AIS specialist this book is very useful for achieving and maintaining flexibility.
