I traded in my DLO leather case - soft and lovely - but totally impratical.

I also stopped using an iFrogz treadz case because it covered the proximity sensor (translation - you hang up on people because the touch screen isn't disenagaged when you put the phone to your head). This Speck case however is designed to leave the sensor open.

I know a lot of people have reviewed this item already and there isn't much more I can add, but here goes. I LOVE the toughskin case! I have dropped it many times on tile floors and it has survived just fine. That leads me into the negative side: the reason for the drops. The belt case holds it well, but the belt clip SUCKS.

OK - the Speck -- I love it. It is tough. It's not pretty - but it's functional. The design lets you flip the phone in, so it has total screen protection.

The belt clip can pivot, so you can have it on its side, up, or anywhere in between.

Also, I have dropped this before, and the phone landed on its face on the sidewalk. The rubber case creates a raised frame around the screen, so there were no scratches-- it worked like a charm.

The only downside is the large belt clip. It's versatile, but it pokes my belly. I blame myself because I am FAT. :) Thinner people won't even notice.

4.0 out of 5 stars This case saved my marriage. Oh yeah, and my iPhone., September 27, 2007
This review is from: Speck IPH-BLK-TS ToughSkin iPhone Case (Black) (Wireless Phone Accessory)
My iPhone is a week old. One week. One. This is important to remember.

One week old. Today, in fact.

After thoroughly reviewing what feels like every iPhone case available, I purchased the Speck Toughskin. I liked the look, and it appeared as though it had a high "grip factor." Like most silicone cases, it attracts dust. So what?

This morning, the clip proved to be a liability. It was clipped to an inside pocket of my tote bag (probably not in "clip mode" but more likely the clip was in the less secure "stand mode.") Anyway, as I was exiting my SUV my iPhone went flying and landed face down on the pavement - a vertical drop of 3 feet. My heart was quite literally in my throat, wondering how I was going to explain this $400 destruction to my husband.

Imagine my - what? Delight, Amazement...no, RELIEF to discover that my iPhone had suffered NO injuries during this potentially-catastrophic mishap. None - no internal issues, no cosmetic injuries. Nada.

I rated the Toushskin 4 stars. Now, the clip definitely needs improvement. My iPhone likely would not have flown out of my tote bag if it had a more secure clip. Although I am aware that some "operator-error" may have been involved here. But the fact that the Toughskin was able to save my iPhone (and my marriage) from destruction is beyond measure.

Thanks, Speck!

4.0 out of 5 stars Speck case feels great, September 12, 2007

This case is great. I love the iphone, it has a good weight and build quality to it. Add this case and it does in fact make your iphone feel tough while at the same time providing good finger grip. It has a very industrial look and feel.

I'm not a fan of fancy cases that have built in clips or headphone winders or anything like that. I wanted something that was simple, slim enough to slide in my pocket but if I dropped the phone could take a beating. This case fits those needs.

The belt clip really isn't that great, it's very cheap feeling and only works to stand the iPhone up vertically. I don't use it, I don't trust it. So if you're looking for a belt clip solution this probably isn't it.

My only other complaint is that the material it's made out of and color picks up pocket lint and hair pretty easily. So it's not going to stay shiny black for more then the first few minutes. After that it gets very matte rubbery looking, which I kind of prefer, but I still find myself pulling hairs off of it.

It doesn't offer any screen protection, but then again the iPhone has a tempered glass screen so it won't scratch like video ipods. In fact I'm not sure putting anything on the screen would help at all. If it hits hard enough even a thin film protector isn't going to stop it from breaking and if you put a hard polycarbonate plastic cover over it you'll just have to annoyingly remove that cover every time you want to use the phone. When buying this case I was more worried about denting or scuffing the aluminum and corners while providing some level of shock resistance to falls.

The spring on the clip is very weak and when I use the restroom (hence the tile floors) the weight of the phone on the clip spring allows it to slip off my belt. Luckily it hasn't gone into the toilet! I now have to take it off my belt when using the restroom and have learned not to set it down for fear of forgetting it. The clip is also not long enough for wider belts. I do like that the clip can stay open to prop up the phone if you are watching a movie. If the manufacturers would just beef up the spring and make the clip about 1/2 inch longer it would be perfect. Oh, and yes, I agree with some that the upper part of the clip does poke you in the belly regardless of your weight!

5.0 out of 5 stars Attractive & Utilitarian, February 11, 2008
This review is from: Speck IPH-BLK-TS ToughSkin iPhone Case (Black) (Wireless Phone Accessory)
I bought this case based upon looking over at least a dozen other iPhone cases and holsters listed on Amazon. After this one caught my eye, I went down to my local Apple Store to inspect it up close and decided to buy it. While I have yet to drop my iPhone (knock on wood) this case just exudes confidence with its sturdy, yet sleek, silicone knobbiness coupled with the hard plastic cradling holster that has a lock-in-place clip to double as a support stand for your phone... and in my opinion (and obviously many other happy reviewers before me) it just looks f**king COOL!

As far as the drawbacks are concerned, I honestly don't relate to the folks who talk about dust issues. Mine stays virtually immaculate despite going in and out of my jacket pockets, riding on the outside of my jeans during bike excursions (the clip is incredibly secure, by the way), and being handled and ogled upon by all my friends and family members. The only MINOR thing I can drum up is the fact that you cannot place the iPhone on to the dock easily without removing the cradle, and removing the silicone skin. Big deal. Just plug the cord in the bottom and you're accomplishing the same goal as docking by syncing and charging your phone.

I love this case and honestly cannot recommend it enough.

The grip is great on the silicon. It removed the feeling that I'm going to drop my iPhone and saved the phone from a minor fall and a few major.

Downside So far I've only seen this in black. I'd like to see it in a different color so I can tell the difference between mine and my wifes' phone. Another negative, but expected, is that you have to remove it if you want to use a dock. But it does not interfere with the charging cable and does not block the speakers or camera.

When this comes in a different color I probably will get another.

I like this case better than any other one so far. It offers a good amount of protection and grip. It does attract a lot of dust and the belt clip leaves much to be desired. If you are just looking for a holster style case I recommend DLO Black lambskin Exposed leather Holster for the iPhone However it doesn't offer the protection that this case does. My solution was just to buy both and switch them out based on what I am doing. I can' wait for better cases!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great cover and case, October 21, 2007
This review is from: Speck IPH-BLK-TS ToughSkin iPhone Case (Black) (Wireless Phone Accessory)
Cover fits snugly and allows for access to all ports and buttons. Belt clip works better than I thought it would. It holds the iphone snugly and securely, allows you to mount the phone in the clip screen-in or screen-out for safety, and it's designed to break away cleanly if you snag it on something. You'll notice when it breaks away, and it snaps back together easily. I saw some reviews that complained about the case collecting lint. This is true but can be cured by just blowing it off. Another complaint that I saw was that the case stretched out and deformed. I've had this case for about two months and it still fits very snug with no noticeable stretching. Overall a great, versatile case.

I had only had my iPhone a few days when I got this case, and now I can't imagine how I did without it even that long. I now think of it as just part of the phone. I love the feel...I love the fit...I love the look...and I love the security it creates in making it harder to drop. Get this quick before it disappears!

1.0 out of 5 stars Nice Cover but your phone won't work properly after you put it on, November 6, 2008
This review is from: Speck IPH-BLK-TS ToughSkin iPhone Case (Black) (Wireless Phone Accessory)
Initially, I really liked the cover and when my IPhone started acting strange, I thought it was the phone. How in the world, I asked myself, could a cover make my screen go black and not let me hang it up? Well, a friend of mine and I found that the part of this cover closest to the top of the IPhone screen actually covers the sensors that tell it to turn off when it's on your ear. This really confuses the IPhone and when you take it off your ear, it can't always tell and you get a black screen. This is EXTREMELY frustrating when you put a call on mute, for instance, and someone in a meeting asks you a question. Well, you can't come off mute because the screen is black. You also won't be able to hang up the phone on your end - not a big deal if the other end hangs up, but extremely annoying if you are talking to your 6 year old and they don't always hang up!!!

So, what do you do? Well, I still have my cover but I had to use an exacto knife to do some modifying. For $[...], I think this is absolutely ridiculous and I'm completely disappointed. You would think this company had some quality assurance with their products -- apparently not though.
