For those of you who worship the 1963 Phil Spector produced LP, 'A Christmas Gift For You', this CD is surprisingly quite good. Of course it is not recorded at Gold Star Studio with it's fat echo chamber, nor are there voices of black girl group singers singing over an army of percussion, honking horns, hammering pianos and pounding drums by L.A.s 'Wrecking Crew'. This outing is recorded by three men who copy the Spector Sound brilliantly with modern recording technology. Theses guys can sound like girl or boy singers and imitate the vocal styles of The Ronettes, Crystals, Darlene Love, Bob B. Soxx & The Blue Jeans AND.......if he original Philles album also included the Righteous Brothers and Tina Turner, them singing their versions of Spectoresque Christmas songs. I was blown away by 'HAVE YOURSELF A MERRY LITTLE CHRISTMAS' with it's castanet clacking arrangement underneath a vocal track in the style of Bob B. Soxx & The Blue Jeans. MARY'S BOY CHILD has the Jive Bunny ensemble sounding very much like The Righteous Brothers' 'You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin' with a Christmas twist. The Tina Turner sound comes blasting through similar to 'River Deep, Mountain High' with the Christmas classic, STEP INTO CHRISTMAS. What makes this CD even more enjoyable is that it is continuous music from start to finish as all of the tracks blend from one into the next.
After you finish playing the original Philles album, slap this one in the player and let the 'Wall Of Sound' keep going.
