5.0 out of 5 stars Greatest Nixon Book By Far!!!!!!!!!!!
This is the greatest Nixon book I have ever read, it was the first one I have read and I have gone back to read it several times, including doing two book reports on it. It's spine chilling and nerve wracking. You can't put it down, so don't even try! It keeps you on the edge of your seat, and then makes you fall off with a surprize ending! Definatly five stars and...

Dina later finds out that Julie is in the hospital from a car accident she got into with her mom and dad. Julie tells her a guy named Sikes made them get into the car accident and killed her parents. Then she says Sikes is now trying to kill her. Dina and Julie then become very good friends and Dina helps Julie with her problems. Julie never wants Dina to leave her because she thinks Sikes will get her if Dina does. Julie even wants to live with her when they get out of the hospital. Will Dina find Sikes and help Julie get on with her life?

One thing I like about this book is that it is a kind of scary mystery book; those are the kind of books I like. Also it has a lot of action in it. A reason that I did not like this book is because at times it got kind of confusing trying to figure out what was going on and who all the characters were. It was hard knowing the characters because there was so much of them. Also at times it got boring. Overall this book was a pretty good book.

I would recommend this book to people that like mystery and scary books. Through the whole book I was trying to figure out if Sikes was true and who he was. If you like the author Joan Lowery Nixon you should read this book.

This a great mystery that I thoroughly enjoyed.
I liked how the two main characters (Julie & Dina)
needed to be friends, but Dina was afraid that
befriending Juilie would make her the target of a
killer. I love Nixon's books, especially her
suspensful mysterys and I reccomend this book for
other young adults to enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars Katie Handevidt - The Specter, December 12, 2005

Katie Handevidt - The Specter

Nixon, Joan. (1982). The Specter.

New York: Random House, Inc.

The Specter is a great book! Joan Lowery Nixon is a great author! This book is about a 17 year old girl named Dina trying to fight off cancer. While she is in the hospital she gets a younger roommate, Julie. Julie has just survived a horrible car accident and she is the only one who made it. Julie thinks someone purposely tried to kill her. Julie is afraid that who ever caused the accident will try to kill her again. When they are both out of the hospital, Julie thinks Dina might have something to do with the accident. So while Dina is driving she starts chocking Dina. Dina swears that she didn't have anything to do with the accident! To prove herself, she helps Julie figure out who caused the car accident.

The character Dina is a seven-teen year old girl who's trying to fight off cancer. She is in the hospital a lot so she doesn't really have time to do regular things like an ordinary seven-teen year old would do. She also has dark hair and is skinny.

This book is great! I love books that you just want to keep reading to find out what happens. Joan Lowery Nixon is a great author! This book scared me a little at a couple parts but was really awesome! If you are in to mystery this would be the perfect gift for you!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Nixon's Best...., October 12, 2002
By
T (Sacramento, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Specter (St. Antony's MacMillan Series (London, England)) (Mass Market Paperback)
This book is about a girl named Dina. She has Hodgkin's Disease and becomes friends with a 9-year-old girl named Julie in the hospital. Julie was in a car accident in which her parents were killed. She has no other relatives, and she is terrified of a man she calls Sikes. She insists that he killed her parents and is coming back to finish her off. Will Sikes put Dina's life in jeopardy to get to Julie?...

Overall, "The Specter" was average. I'll admit that there was a stange twist at the end, but the rest of the storyline was bland and boring. There wasn't much mystery until the last couple chapters, and it was a little predictable. Joan Lowery Nixon is my favorite suspense author, but it seems like her earlier books weren't as good as her newer ones (such as "The Seance" and "The Kidnapping of Christina Lattimore"). Back then, there wasn't as good of sources for ideas, such as scary movies, etc., so I forgive her....

Also recommended: "Name of the Game Was Murder," "Who Are You," "Spirit Seeker," and "Nobody's There," all by Joan Lowery Nixon!

4.0 out of 5 stars DANGER!, January 7, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Specter (St. Antony's MacMillan Series (London, England)) (Mass Market Paperback)
In this book there is a girl named Julie, and she has no family that is still alive. She met a girl named Dina who she always stayed by her side thoughout this book. Julie thinks that there is a man named Stikes that killed her parents, and is now out to kill her. Because of this, Julie thinks she sees Stikes throughout the story and she gets people in a lot of trouble. If you like adventure and suspence, then you'll love this book, as I did.

4.0 out of 5 stars This book was...OK, April 5, 2005
This review is from: The Specter (St. Antony's MacMillan Series (London, England)) (Mass Market Paperback)
I don't understand why the author named the book The Specter, if you look up the word Specter it says:

A ghostly apparition;

A phantom;

A haunting or disturbing image;

nothing in the book had to do with the title "The Specter"

Anyway, in the book Julie got on my nerves, she treated Dina like she was her life support, and she got everyone worked up for nothing claiming that she seen Sikes everywhere.

The ending was a disappointment because I thought Sikes was going to be something else beside what Julie claimed him to be.

Over all I gave this book 4 stars because it was suspenseful but the ending was a disappointment.
