Product Description

The S2 boasts so many great features and is designed to truly meet the needs of moms wanting to feel confident that they have an effective, powerful breast pump to support supply while also incorporating features to make life a little easier. Like all Spectra pumps, the S2 is a closed system - a physical barrier between the milk and the pump ensures hygiene and motor performance. The S2 is intended to rival the Medela Symphony, and even surpass it with some of its innovative features designed to make life easier for moms. The S2 is hospital grade - strong and efficient enough to support milk supply. With a maximum suction strength of 300mmHg and the ability to be used as a single or double pump. Completely flexible, touch button with the S2 pump's digital controls. These allow you to set the pumping program to the speed and rhythm most effective for your body. The pump will start in 'massage mode', a short, shallow mode designed to stimulate your body's letdown reflex (start the milk flowing) just like how your baby tells your body to start milk flow. The pump will then switch to expression mode, a deeper, slower pattern of suction which mimics how your baby nurses when the milk is flowing. For women who find it hard to get a letdown when pumping, this feature really helps - switch back and forth as needed. The suction is also adjustable whether in let-down or expression mode. Includes a timer and nightlight. This pump is also NEARLY silent... You can see on the picture that you can adjust both cycle (how often the pump 'sucks') and vacuum (the strength of the suction) easily, and the digital display allows you to see your program at a glance. If item has been opened and/or used it is non-returnable due to health and sanitation as these are considered single person use items. For product issues please contact the seller directly and you purchased pump from.

I got this pump through my insurance company as one last toy before I end my pumping journey!

I'm actually a women's health provider and for years have thought Medela was the BEST as that was the brand we used in the hospital, but now I have been suggesting the S2 to my patients. Medela is still a very good pump, but for the cost, comfort, and comparable product I think Spectra S2 is better.

I need to pump efficiently and quickly. I'm full-time working mom of three. I've effectively managed to give my babies only EBM and have donated thousands oz of breast milk. I've used the Medela PISA with the normal flanges and with the freemie attachments, Medela freestyle, and also the Medela symphony hospital grade pump. Yes, I am a pump hoarder, but this is through 3-4 years of pumping.

Spectra S2: I started seeing a lot of recommendations from mommy forums about this pump, so I was very intrigued. This pump definately more quiet and more comfortable. This is a hosptial grade pump, capable of pumping single or double. There are two holes up front where you can connect the tubing to. Flanges fit and were comfortable. S2 is a closed system, which is a benefit to share with friends when done, reuse, or resell. I've seen that there is a way to "hack" and use medela tubing and flanges, but I had no reason to do so. Most people shared they did it b/c they want to be able to use all the extra medela supplies. Their tubing is more of a silicone and flexible, then there is this round piece that comes apart and cups together that connects from the tubing to the flanges. I am thinking this is part of the "closed" system. Never have had back flow as I've had in my medela PIS. Digital screen.

[See below for my update, posted after Spectra released the S1 pump.]

I decided to try a Spectra pump after my second Medela Pump In Style Advanced crapped out on me, and I am so glad I did - the S2 pump is amazing - so much better than the PISA (and than the Hygeia EnJoye pump I briefly tried) in almost every way.

PROS: comfortable to use, sucking action more like a baby than any other pump I've used, quick/efficient, quiet, letdown mode, completely customizable pumping experience due to independent speed and suction controls, closed system if you use the included collection kit with its backflow filters, very good customer service through Mother's Milk, amazingly low price, lightweight, motor life of 1500 hours

CONS: collection kit not that great and some (surmountable) difficulties with using other collection kits, no option to run on batteries or car charger

OVERALL: All in all, even with my complaints about the collection kit, I love this pump and highly recommend it!

ALL THE DETAILS: (Warning: I'm including LOTS of details, since this product has just come out, and reviews are hard to find.)

I work full-time and have pumped at work since my son was about three months old - so I've been breastfeeding and pumping for over a year and a half now! I got this pump after using a Medela PISA regularly for most of that year and a half, and after trying the Hygeia Enjoye for a couple of weeks. (Both Medela PISAs I owned gradually lost suction strength until they were basically useless - Medela replaced it, at no cost, the first time this happened, but wouldn't replace the replacement when it became useless, too.

This is just instructions on how to use Medela parts for your Spectra. See also the picture I uploaded. You may have to click on my name to go to my profile page and go to the "images" tab since Amazon or Spectra removed the photo from the main product page.

I just used the Spectra for the first time today, and I really loved it... except for the collection kit (as also noted by other users)! Instead of having to use the awkward system indefinitely, I decided that I still wanted to use my Medela parts and was going to do something about it (heck, I already have the parts from the PISA I was using). It's a pretty easy hack and only took me a few minutes and a pair of scissors.

1) Cut about 2" of Spectra tubing. I chose to cut the Spectra tubing because I didn't like how sticky it was and preferred to use Medela tubing for the longer tubing.

2) Take the little plastic piece out of the Medela tubing (the one that fits into the back of the collection kit), then insert the plastic piece that you took out of the Medela tubing into the 2" cut piece

3) Jam the other side of the 2" piece onto the Spectra hygienic shield (takes some muscle work, but it can be done!).

Done - you have a Medela friendly collection kit for your Spectra!

Update 9/25/13: After using the revised kit for a while, I would probably stick to use the Spectra tubing instead of switching it out with the Medela tubes, as I found it very difficult to remove the Medela tubes from the pump. They tend to be stickier than the Spectra (although I hate that the Spectra tubing picks up all the lint and dog hair in my house).
