Product Description

The S1 boasts so many great features, including an inbuilt rechargeable battery and is designed to truly meet the needs of moms wanting to feel confident that they have an effective, powerful breast pump to support supply while also incorporating features to make life a little easier. Like all Spectra pumps, the S1 is a closed system - a physical barrier between the milk and the pump ensures hygiene and motor performance. The S1 is intended to rival the Medela Symphony, and even surpass it with some of its innovative features designed to make life easier for moms. The S1 is hospital grade - strong and efficient enough to support milk supply. Used in hospitals to establish a milk supply for moms with premies! With a maximum suction strength of 350mmHg and the ability to be used as a single or double pump, plus a host of additional features, the S1, like her sister the S2, is set to become the ultimate breast pump to support U.S. moms. Completely flexible, touch button with the S1 pump's digital controls. These allow you to set the pumping program to the speed and rhythm most effective for your body. The pump will start in 'massage mode', a short, shallow mode designed to stimulate your body's letdown reflex (start the milk flowing) just like how your baby tells your body to start milkflow. The pump will then switch to expression mode, a deeper, slower pattern of suction which mimics how your baby nurses when the milk is flowing. For women who find it hard to get a letdown when pumping, this feature really helps - switch back and forth as needed. The suction is also adjustable whether in let-down or expression mode! Includes a timer and nightlight. You can see on the picture that you can adjust both cycle (how often the pump 'sucks') and vacuum (the strength of the suction) easily, and the digital display allows you to see your program at a glance. Can be used with it's inbuilt battery for 1 hour on full charge or plug it in...it's up to you!

The Spectra S1 is honestly just as good in terms of comfort and milk production.
Not only does this pump empty my breasts better than the Medela Symphony, it is also MUCH less painful, even on the highest suction setting.
I also really like that it has a timer and that you can control the speed and suction independently.

Buy this pump. Seriously, stop looking, buy it. This review is long but will hopefully answer any questions you have. Or post one and I'll try to answer it.

Earlier this year I had twins born at 34 weeks. They were doing well, but did spend some time in the NICU. When babies are in the NICU, you become super obsessed with how much milk they are getting. They can't go home until they take their "minimums" and gain weight. As a result, I've pretty much been exclusively pumping since they were born. My girl would latch, but I couldn't tell how much she was getting and she would get tired after a few minutes and wouldn't take the rest of her bottle. My boy had breathing problems at first and was being fed with a tube for the first 10 days. After that he had to learn how to eat and would get tired, so I didn't try to nurse him. Since I had to feed two and wanted to share my supply, pumping was the way to go.

Since I had preemies, my insurance paid for me to use a Medela Lactina pump. This is the big blue thing that is "hospital grade" and retails for a boatload ($1500 for the love!). I used the Lactina for the first two months but wanted something more portable (I bought a car adapter so I could plug it in and pump in the car on long days out). And, the Lactina is loud as all get out, which was annoying and I actually covered it with a blanket to muffle the sound so I could pump in the same room my husband and 3 year old daughter were watching TV in so I could be part of the family. I contemplated getting a Medela Freestyle, but read mixed reviews about being able to maintain supply. Having twins I did not want to risk my supply going down.

I took a leap of faith and bought this pump using gift cards for about half the cost.

As a working mom, I needed a solution for pumping that would be comfortable and effective. I had been using a Medela personal double pump (like the PISA with fewer features). Pumping with the Medela 3-5X a day left my breasts sore and I hated pumping. I did a lot of research and found that Spectra consistently had the best reviews. When the S1 became available, I decided to give it a chance.

The S1 is all together great. It is quiet, doesn't tug/pull the way the medela did. All together, it makes pumping a far less annoyance. Don't get me wrong, pumping still isn't fun, but at least it isn't painful.

Pros of the s1: super quiet (I can take conference calls while pumping), gentle, light weight, incredibly effective (my supply is now WAY too much - trying to figure that out....)

Cons: the bottles aren't great, no carrying case.

I couldn't take stars away for the two superficial complaints I have. Overall, I would suggest to any mom that they should give Spectra a chance. It's been wonderful for me!

Some background information about me: my baby is 6 months and I have been pumping since he was about 3 months when I returned to work. I started out using the Medela Symphony which I rented from the hospital and decided to purchase a pump. I found out that my insurance company would cover the pump but after some research, I decided that I would rather buy my own pump than get a Medela portable based on the reviews and feedback from other moms. My criteria for pumps was to find something that was portable, hospital-grade and affordable and the all the breast pumps from Spectra fit this bill. I currently own the M1 as well. I chose to buy the S1 pump mainly for the rechargeable battery since it is more convenient for me at work where I have little time during my breaks.

What I like about the Spectra S1:
-Aesthetically, this pump is super cute and a good size to stash in the tote bag I also purchased from Spectra. It has a nice handle to move the pump from one place to another and the LCD screen is a good size.
-The pump is quiet which is nice for those late night pumping sessions or at work.
-Is the ultimate portable hospital grade pump - unlike the Medela Symphony it doesn't require an outlet to be near by.
-Since I started using the Spectra pumps in my fourth month, my supply has shown an increase, even when using the M1 which is a smaller pump than both the Medela or S1. This is completely subjective but I feel since switching away from the Symphony, my supply increased and I haven't had to use any galactagogues since. I know that each person responds differently to different pumps but I can say that it has been entirely positive for mine. :-)
-Customer service: Spectra Baby has the best customer service!

I took a leap of faith when I bought this pump since it was new to the market and there were so few reviews, BUT I am so glad I did. I used the madela pump in style advanced with my first child and it was ok and everyone had convinced me it was the best pump, but as a working mom I quit breast feeding sooner than I wanted because the madela motor was failing and I just wasn't getting enough milk. This spectra pump is amazing in comparison. In addition to feeding my 4 week old who is packing on the pounds, I have been able to pump an extra 6 - 10 oz a day for the freezer! A few highlights:
- suction is superior to the madela PISA and hygiea enjoye. I used the madela symphony for a short period with my daughter while she was in the hospital and this rivals it if not better.
- suction and speed independently controlled
- single or double pumping made easy (stays strong when just pumping one side)
- lightweight and easy to tote around
- VERY comfortable suction, pumping hurt less than BF at first and isn't uncomfortable at all
- fairly quiet
- I almost never plug in except overnight to recharge
- not as important but the pump is cute too!
- customer service was great! Had a few questions before I purchased and a lady got right back to me via email and gave me her direct email to ask any additional questions.
- 2 year warranty (according to customer service)

- parts are not available in store (although I have been using madela bottles to pump into and they fit very well)
- bottles provided for pumping are not great
- no carrying case (although personally I would rather have a very portable pump that's easy to tote around and buy a bag of my own style to carry it in)

I rarely write reviews but felt I needed to share this so other moms to be could feel comfortable with their purchase. I have been recommending to all my pregnant friends
