A lot of the negative reviews here are due to runoff after adding water. The instructions say to water gently and do not water to the point of runoff. If you're applying the granules to a flat, open area of your lawn, you'll probably have runoff if you don't go very slowly, like the instructions state. This is how I handle it:

I take a 2-inch-thick, 5-foot-long dowel (a yardstick or even a dry, dead branch would also work) and, standing as far back as possible, I pierce the top of the mound as deeply as I can. I pull the dowel back out and drop it away from the mound, then step back and wait five or so minutes. After the angry ant mob calms down, I use an old measuring cup (one no longer used for food) to pour the granules directly into and around the hole I created with the dowel. I then use an old one-gallon water jug, filled with tap water, to pour the water into the hole on top of the granules. I usually pour too fast, and end up with runoff, so I use a hand broom to sweep the wet granules and mud back onto the mound. I've never had a problem with serious runoff, even when pouring too fast, but this way I don't feel like I'm wasting any of the granules and it's not spread out all over my lawn.

I typically do this at dusk, when it's still light enough to see but late enough that my six-year-old won't be back outside. I also try to block off the area so our dog can't get to it, although I accompany him outside while the granules are still "active," just in case. It's imperative to do this around/right after dusk or late at night, because that's when the ants are closest to the surface of the mound. If you do this in late morning/early afternoon, you may not have great results.

I too followed the instructions on the package, including pouring water onto the mound, after putting on the FireAnt "Killer" granules. Btw, having to put water on is a dumb idea in my opinion, all it does is wash away the granules you just added. Anyway, I did as they instructed and it didn't do much of anything, in fact within a day or two the fire ants were found walking all over the "killer" granules!! See my attached video to see for yourself...the brown stuff around the edges is the granules.

I switched to Ortho Fireant Killer, and BOY what a difference, that stuff is AWESOME and really works, it is the best one I've tried so far: http://www.amazon.com/Ortho-0282210-12-Ounce-Orthene-Killer/dp/B000A0UCRG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1372081466&sr=8-1&keywords=ortho+fireant

Have used it before and it works pretty well. Home delivery was the main reason I got it this time. Nothing works
perfectly on Fire Ants.

used the product EXACTLY as described on the back of the package. Ants literally just shift around and build a new mound every day or so only a few feet past the spread zone of the granules. worthless at actually keeping them under control

Nothing is completely effective at fire ant control but this product does as good a job as any killer. Baits like Amdro work the best if you have time but in a camping situation there isn't time to wait for the bait to work so this is a pretty good product to include in your camping supplies.

Spectracide Fire Ant Killer does not seem to kill the fire ants in my yard. It deters them a bit but doesn't kill them.
