Cerebrum is one of those obscure bands on an even more obscure label. This album was difficult to get my hands on. Now that I have, was it worth the effort? Short answer: Yes.

Starting with the cover art, I can't begin to explain what it looks like. Maybe a few survivors of the human race gathering in a courtyard at the foot of a giant machine that is programmed to consume the world? It seems odd, but then again, what death metal album cover doesn't?

The music is really good, when it is actually shredding and blasting the life out of my speakers. The major problem with this album is the time signature changes are so frequent, particularly early in the album that the music seems chopped up like an expirimental demo CD. When every instrument is churning out high-quality brutality is when this band truly shines. The vocalist has a good growl and a few interesting vocal melodies, especially later in the album.

Another thing worth noting is that this album does not feature a drummer as part of the band. All of the drums on this album were performed by George from Nile. I think he must be playing on a different set or the production is just that much different than Nile, because it sounds nothing like Nile. The mid-range beats sound more like a hollow pop than a thick thump and the cymbals are racheted up a little too loudly, again, particularly early in the album. The music improves throughout the progress of the album, so not too much should be taken away because of these elements.

I really did enjoy this album from a relatively unknown Greek technical death metal band. It is worth picking up if you can find it. Spectral Extravagance gets 3.7/5 stars.

This is an incredible band, they play technical death metal, their sound is not something you never heard but the way they mix the instruments and the different sounds is full of creativity. They perfectly managed to put each sound in the right place at the right moment, you will even find some clear vocals in some of their songs and believe they are placed right where they should be, adding the perfect element to make it greater. If you like technichal death metal, you will find here a great album that every time you listen, you grow to like it more and more.In every spin you give it there is something new to discover.
Highly recomended.
