Sixth Doctor Meets the Brigadier, July 17, 2009
This review is from: Spectre of Lanyon Moor (Doctor Who) (Audio CD)
Lanyon Moor has a rich archaeological history--and a history of sinister happenings. When the TARDIS lands the Doctor and Evelyn in the Cornish countryside, the pair team up with Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart to solve the mystery of the moor.
This audio is simply great fun. Scriptwriter Nicholas Pegg gives fans a tale with a decidedly and deliciously retro flavour. Even better, he gives us the Sixth Doctor and the Brigadier together for the first time.
Set in a storybook rural setting and populated with eccentric characters, this gothic mystery harkens back to the height of the Tom Baker era. However, Colin Baker has no trouble making the story his own. Maggie Stables in her second outing as companion Evelyn gives a strong performance, infusing her character with both tenderness and plucky strength. Nicholas Courtney slips back into the Brigadier's uniform without missing a beat--his voice as rich and mellow as a fine red wine.
Highly recommended--a great place to start if you want to introduce a Doctor Who fan to Big Finish audios.

The Brig and Evelyn finally win one!, August 6, 2008
This review is from: Spectre of Lanyon Moor (Doctor Who) (Audio CD)
As of this writing I have owned or listened to several adventures of the doctor featuring his big finish companion Evelyn.
The Apocalypse Element (Doctor Who),
Real Time (Doctor Who), and
Assassin in the Limelight (Doctor Who). I've also had a pair of adventures with the Brig that I own:
Old Soldiers (Dr Who: The Companion Chronicles) and
Minuet in Hell (Doctor Who). In each case unfortunately I have been unable to gush. They have ranged from the avg or slightly above avg to the worst of the big finish batch.
I'm pleased to say that The Spectre of Lanyton Moor breaks the mold. We have a really solid story a better supporting cast and I actually find myself caring about what happens to Dr. Smythe as her character really comes into her own here. It really is the best written and plotted story that I've heard with the character.
Meanwhile the Big gets a better story and a full cast rather than a single actor to play against.
Baker's normal fine performance is is in sharp contract to what the next episode will offer. the next episode (Apocalypse Element).
Of the first 10 it is one of the best, it should be one of yours.
