4.0 out of 5 stars Response to Ruth's post
This is the first post I have ever made, because although I love to read, I hate to write. I felt I had to respond to the post by Ruth Ingram. After reading her post, I was expecting something totally different than the first book. I also expected to see the phrase, "nipples popped up like raisins," a bunch of times. the main focus of this sequel appears to be sex, the action and plot have kind of taken a back seat to the need of the heroin to get laid. i don't remember the first book having so much sexual flamboyancy. its not even an undertone, but the driving force coating every page from page 1. feels like our dear author needed a booty call herself while writing this. still a good...

4.0 out of 5 stars Response to Ruth's post, July 22, 2008
This review is from: Spectre (Zoe Martinique, Book 2) (Mass Market Paperback)
This is the first post I have ever made, because although I love to read, I hate to write. I felt I had to respond to the post by Ruth Ingram. After reading her post, I was expecting something totally different than the first book. I also expected to see the phrase, "nipples popped up like raisins," a bunch of times. The book was written in the same way as the first book. It made me laugh at times, usually due to Zoe's inner dialog (which is one of the things I loved in the first book). I was waiting to be annoyed by the "raisin nipples," but was surprised to not see the phrase till about 1/3 of the way through the book. After reading Ruth's post, I expected to see the phrase repeatedly after this point. I am not trying to be contradictory, but that was the only time raisin's and nipples were used in the same sentence in the entire book. The book lived up to my expectations and I throughly enjoyed it. The one thing I will comment on is that it definitely leaves a lot of questions unanswered, which to me is a good thing because that means there should be a third book (there better be!). I would also liked to have seen a small section that reminded me of what many of the words meant (kind of like a dictionary). I tended to forget the exact specifications of some of the words (e.g. symbiont, Phantasm, etc). Overall, this was a great read for me!

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Character Voice; Interesting Story, August 25, 2009
By

(VINE VOICE)
Although this is not the best book I've ever read, it was a solid 4.4. I'd say 4.5, but then I'd have to round up and it wasn't that good. I personally enjoyed Zoe's inner dialog, it made her more real to me, but I can also see how some people could find that highly annoying.

I've never read the first book, though I probably will some day. This book is obviously the second of what the author intends to be a longer series. (best guess would be 4 or 5, whatever the market will bear I guess.) In this book, Zoe's still getting used to her newfound powers as a Wraith and discovering new aspects to that power.

The plot was rather basic, by that I mean I felt like I'd heard it all before, and the other characters were just so-so. Still, Zoe's inner voice was just plain funny. For those of us sensitive to profanity, um there is a lot of it in here. Granted, some of it is very well placed and very funny. For some reason, I couldn't tune my reading ear to hear a Southern accent throughout most of the book, which I found strange given the setting.

One thing that bothered me was the lack of a feeling of closure at the end of the book. Saying much more than that would give away some pretty big plot twists, but it's like the feeling at the end of the Empire Strikes Back. Yeah, maybe things are ok for now, but there's so much left undone. I really dislike those blatant sort of buy-the-next-book ploys. Oh and another thing, it's not really an "investigation" I mean the woman does more work just trying to figure herself out than murder mystery type thing. Things just seem to fall into place around her.

Lovely book overall, looking forward to more, sort of wish it were for a younger crowd though, so I could recommend it to kids. I think it's one of the best examples of voice I've seen in a long time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story, fresh ideas- loved it., January 8, 2009
This review is from: Spectre (Zoe Martinique, Book 2) (Mass Market Paperback)
I saw a few bad reviews on this book, and I just had to answer. Frankly, I can't see what they are complaining about. The author is just hitting her stride after writing two very original books. In this time when we are swamped with cliched paranormal fiction, I have to give these books their due- the story is excellent, unusual, and the powers of the main charactor are unusual and not at all mainstream. The book is a hint of fresh air in a genre getting crowded and stuffy- and way to cookie cutter with charactors, powers repeated over and over, and plots that we have all seen before. I really enjoyed the books, and ran to check when the next one was coming out as soon as I was done. I hope the author continues the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ms. Weldon's second book worth the read!, October 27, 2008

I completely enjoyed the sequal to Wraith. Phaedra Weldon kept my attention with action, compassion and a dry wit not seen in fantasy often these days. I would recomend this book to anyone who wants a good read and a fun time while doing it! Two thumbs up!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Fun, Second in a Series, October 12, 2008
This review is from: Spectre (Zoe Martinique, Book 2) (Mass Market Paperback)
I found Spectre to be a fast read and very enjoyable. Zoe is still coming to terms with being able to travel outside of her body at will. In Spectre she is thrown into the investigation of a series of creepy murders along with her Detective boyfriend Daniel. Everyone from the first book is back, including Zoe's Mom's and when she disappears Zoe is at a loss to find her, and each time she travels outside of her body searching, she seems to be turning into something not all together human.

This book has lots of action, mystery, ghosts and romance. I am looking forward to book 3.

3.0 out of 5 stars sexy, March 18, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
the main focus of this sequel appears to be sex, the action and plot have kind of taken a back seat to the need of the heroin to get laid. i don't remember the first book having so much sexual flamboyancy. its not even an undertone, but the driving force coating every page from page 1. feels like our dear author needed a booty call herself while writing this. still a good idea and a good plot drive, just too much sexual frustration. sadly it weighs down the story and buries the plot. some sexual undertones can carry things along and feed the story line, too much just bogs it down. if the series continues this way it will need to be moved to the erotica section and our main character will have to actually get herself some. this is not the kind of thing i like to pick up in the sci fi section. but perhaps it was miss shelved. either way it needed a strong romance warning.

i have found it a slow and painful read. leaving me struggling to get through to the end. here's hoping things pick up and book 3 is more captivating.

5.0 out of 5 stars great urban fantasy, June 3, 2008
This review is from: Spectre (Zoe Martinique, Book 2) (Mass Market Paperback)
While walking out of her body one day Zoe Martinique clashed with a Sybiont she calls Trench Coat from the Abysmal plane. She changes into a Wraith when something happens to her or her loved ones. When she is OOB and Wraith, Zoe is not human, but Other. Trench Coat took her voice and gave her his mark on her hand. Zoe is able to use her new powers as a Traveler and a Wraith to work as a private investigator.

Since she hasn't completed her last assignment for Maherba, she is forced to acceptfor him her them or it an assignment at a benefit at the Atlanta's Westin Plaza; where she is to listen in on a conversation between Congressman March Knowles and Atlanta based businessman Francisco Rodriguez. She hears about two groups, a shipment and something in it that two groups want. She learns these groups somehow linked to three homicides with missing body parts from each victim. Two groups want to catch Zoe in order to control or kill her, but she does her best to elude them while her powers grow. However even she is not strong enough to override the Compulsion of the Command Eidolon that one of her adversarial group's leaders places on her. She is his to command unless her friends can free her.

The supernatural beings are fascinating characters in SPECTRE whether they are daimon, symbiont, shade or ghost; as each has a distinct personality. Zoe remains ignorant as to the extent of her powers or how much they will expand, but though she is often more Other than human and the Wraith is her dark side, she remains an independent free thinker trying to do what she believes is morally right for humanity. This is a great urban fantasy that will have fans anxiously waiting for the next installment in Zoe's saga.
