The brush-stroke style title is certainly a departure from the past. Almost couldn't recognise it as the series. The nice cover art is from Gregory Manchess. It still comes as either a paperback or hardcover edition featuring 284 pages of wonderful art work.

Volume 17 is yet another great collection. You've work from the (gold) winners: Sam Weber, Omar Rayyan, Steven Tabbutt, Daniel Dociu, Mark Newman, Chris Buzelli, Ed Binkley, Eric Fortune and many other top artists. The Grand Master Award goes to Al Williamson. You can check out the full list of artists featured on the Spectrum website.

Some of the artists who I thought had retired are actually not. It's really hard to follow these artists when sometimes they don't even have a website, or update them regularly. In Spectrum 17, you can catch up on their latest work for the year.

The usual categories are Advertising, Book, Comics, Concept Art, Dimensional, Editorial, Institutional and Unpublished. There are environment paintings, character designs, concept art, sculptures etc. Lots of different subjects and ideas created with different medium and style.

I can't say anything more that I haven't said before. Spectrum one of the best valued and inspiration art annuals around. Highly recommended to artists, art directors and anyone into fantasy art, or into fantastic art.

I look forward to each year's Spectrum. It's an amazing collection of truly great fantasy art. This is no exception. In fact, with more art than the past couple of years, it's an amazing look at the variety of work being produced in the field. I'd also have to say that the pieces themselves seem more interesting and more technically impressive than the past couple of years. Spectrum is a must-have for any sci-fi/fantasy art fan.

From an illustrators point of view, one of the most diverse (sorry to differ with some opinions) Spectrums. A great mix of traditional and digital media and a nod toward the future of this business while still praising tradition. It has been exciting to see the growth and mainstream acceptance of fantastic art and illustration over the years. I can think of no better catalog of that growth than Spectrum.

I have bought every Spectrum, every year, from 1 to 17. As an excellent cross section of artistic styles and mediums in fantastic art, you can't go wrong. The selection is wide, though digital media has gradually taken over as the largest medium represented. Having every edition, I can tell you that the editors have some favored styles, including some rather dark and graphically 'ugly' pieces, like poorly executed H.R. Giger inspired works. But not many, and this is just my personal taste - there is a vast amount of beautifully executed art from comics, books, and film-related subject matter in this series of books. There are many sci-fi and fantasy art books out there, including those of Expose' and others. Spectrum is the gold standard for the category.

One note, I highly recommend that you get the hardbound editions. You'll want to keep these and refer back to them for a very long time. The hardcover editions run out very quickly, so be aware.

This book is an absolute must-buy every single year. While you may not like every painting here there is nowhere else you can find this much great art under one cover.

These artists DO NOT ALL LOOK THE SAME!!!! That is FOR SURE!!! They do sculpture, graphic art, oil, water color, resin, acrylic, various types of art styles and in pretty much EVERY ISSUE!!! I figure model for the art classes at the local university and the figure drawing people have gotten into buying them when I show them. If you are a die hard collector ( I have since age 12) and I have gone to art school and collected for over 20 years you know your stuff basically. It can sometimes be previewed at Barnes and Nobles in the fantasy section for reading. They also include in the back of this yearly guide the artists web sites or addresses. They have some of the best artists like Micheal Wellan, Todd Lockwood, Joe Jusko has been known to be in some of them (he patterned after Frank Franzetta) ect... Kinko Kraft, Don Maitz (WHO IS VERY GOOD), and the list goes on... in this series now of 17 books to new coming artists. I wish the brothers (Tim and Greg) HILDEBRANT were in them (original STAR WARS poster and LORD OF THE RINGS works and much more), Alan Lee, Elmore, Cris Achillios, (Kieth Parkingson in past) for fantasy art. Their private art books usually are bigger than the darn 64 pages coming out in some books. In a sense, I can say for the best NATURE ARTISTS like ROBERT BATEMAN, TERRY ISSAC, CARL BRENDERS (he paints for the Queen of England, these guys are some of the best in the world) are people if you are a collector you may want to look up (AND WILL TEACH YOU BACKGROUNDS FOR ANY SUBJECT AND ANIMALS). Try the book series...it has alot of pages and is alot of FUN... If cost is the question get an older issue that is cheap if you can and buy it and decide whether or not you like the series or preview it at Barnes and Nobles and decide. I love it every year and have every one of them!!!
