Editorial Reviews

Upon receiving an initial diagnosis of Asperger's Syndrome, a high functioning form of Autism, many parents panic and become overloaded with information and misinformation. "On The Spectrum: Coping with Asperger's & Autism" is a 60 minute documentary showing autistic adults and kids overcoming challenges and having success in life. The filmmaker visits video game clubs, elementary school classrooms and therapy sessions while interviewing kids, parents and medical professionals who explain the challenges and victories they've had with Autism. Meet Jonathan: Voted out of class by his classmates and beaten up daily, he is now a successful professional bass player who has studied with jazz bassist Victor Wooten. Meet Matt: A 29-year-old who struggled with Asperger's through high school and is now a highly sought after peer support counselor for children with Asperger's and Autism. The DVD contains over 30 minutes of extras including original trailers, an extended conversation between Matt and Temple Grandin and other deleted scenes. The audience for the film extends to parents, therapists, educators and anyone wanting to see a hopeful portrayal on the subject of autism.

This is a great film that interviews teachers, parents as well as children and adults with autism about the challenges and strengths faced by people with autism and their caregivers. Very helpful for anyone wanting to better understand spectrum disorders.

This review is from: On the Spectrum: Coping with Asperger's & Autism (DVD)
My favorite part about this video was its tone -- not too formal/academic, or too devastated-and-desperate-to-make-them-'normal'. Everyone involved with this video seemed to love someone with Asperger's. It does a good job of showing strengths and weaknesses that can come with this condition. Bravo Strawbelly Jerry Films -- whoever you are!
