I think this workbook will work more for some students than for others. The print is small in comparison to some other third grade workbooks available. This does give more problems per page, but this could be overwhelming too. It does cover things other than addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, such as telling time, measuring, money, calendars, and roman numerals, but it spends very little time on them. I did not like how it teaches addition and subtraction. It shows a graph and then for the addition problem 9 plus 8 it says: Find the 9-row. Find the 8-column. The sum is named where the 9-row and 8-column meet. I thought this was more confusing than anything. It does the same for multiplication and division. In explaining division it gives one page of groupings. Then the only explaination is "If 2x3=6, then 6[divided by]2=3. This is ok, but further explaination might be necessary. The book is also only 160 pages in total.

The biggest thing I do not like is that there are not answers at the back of the book for every page of problems. At one point I found that four pages in a row did not have answers. Unless you want to sit and do the math yourself or don't care if they are correct this can be frustrating.

The best thing I liked about this workbook is that there are lots of word problems. They don't fit many word problems on a page (usually about 5), but many times they are every other page.

I would say that this would make a great supplemental volume if your child doesn't get bored doing so many problems with small print and little color or pictures (I know these aren't necessary, but sometimes it helps). I wouldn't trust this volume to instruct your child, though if this is just a practice volume it might fit your needs just fine.

age appropriate, mimicking what they get in school, these are perfect books to reinforce what is going on at school or pre-teach or review concepts before or after the lesson occurs in school. fabulous!!! I use these every summer to prepare my kids for their next grade. It's cheaper than summer school, more fun and flexible, and as effective if not more so because I am, in essence, home schooling them for a couple of hours every day over summer break. They enter the next fall very well prepared.

From a teacher who has used this system for well over 10 years, this is a fantastic series of books! They are simple, easy to understand and very thorough, unlike most other Math books on the market today.

I'm always on the lookout for learning materials that will challenge and keep my 8-year-old engaged in the core subjects, i.e. English, Math, and Science. I started using the Spectrum Math Grade 3 book during the summer to prepare my daughter for the 3rd grade math curriculum. It is OK as supplementary material, but if you're looking for instruction, then I would suggest looking elsewhere. Each topic comes with very brief explanations as to how a certain problem is to be solved, and at times, the explanations are not as clear as I would have liked. Fortunately, I only used this book for practice after teaching my daughter the concepts and how to solve problems. Even the practice exercises for each section are not as extensive as I would have liked. The book attempts to cover too many topics in one volume, and would have perhaps been more effective as a learning and teaching tool if it had been divided into two volumes, with more space devoted to quality explanations.

The topics covered here are:
Adding
Subtracting
Multiplication
Division
Fractions
Measurement
Money
Time
Graphs
Geometry
Algebra

As a private tutor I like to use this book as a supplement for my 3rd Grade students who are looking to improve on their math skills. This books covers most of the necessary math topics needed to be known by 3rd graders and includes enough practice problems for the students to work on. Great practice book to keep the brain on a constant math exercising mode.

Having gotten a little behind in math during 3rd grade, my kid worked from this book every other day for 6 weeks during summer break. He usually did 2 or 3 half or quarter pages at a time so it wasn't overwhelming (usually a half page from addition, a half from subtraction, and a half from multiplication). He is definitely a lot further ahead than if we had done nothing, and I see that he is breezing through his first several math assignments in 4th grade. This book seems to include material from every math topic studied during 3rd grade. It includes a test after each chapter and a comprehensive mid-book and end of book test.

I got this for my son to use during the summer. He has learning disabilities, so he needs to be doing some math all year so he doesn't forget. I like that this has all the answers in the back. But it is aligned to common core, so many of the lessons make no sense at all. A problem that should take just two steps, has about 8 extra steps added in. We had to tell him to ignore the lesson parts and just do the exercises.
