pretty good practice book,
By Eric Lay (Mountain View, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Spectrum Math, Grade 2 (Paperback)
This book offers concise and clear coverage of grade 2 math topics. It organizes the content by key concept highlights, practice sheets, and some applications. Ideal for 2nd graders to consolidate what they learn in classroom. Do not miss the activities included. They are well designed.
If your child does math daily, she can finish this book pretty soon. As a supplement, I also let my daughter use a Houston community web site www.beestar.org. It provides free timed math exercises online every week. With this book under belt, she ranks pretty high among her peers online. A good math book that delivers result.

Great math review book,

The Spectrum Math series is very good for helping your child review the materials covered in school. We are using it every day and plan to continue using it over the summer to make sure we're ready for next fall!

Great for homeschooling,
This review is from: Spectrum Math, Grade 2 (Paperback)
I'm a relatively new homeschooling mom. When we pulled our 3rd grader out of public school, they said he was an A student. It was a shock to realize just how much he DIDN'T know, and he asked to be put back a year in math, and I agreed.
After completing the second grade Spectrum book, he now completely understands his addition and subtraction concepts in just a few months, and is ready to move on. These books aren't colorful, or cluttered. It is just good, solid math instruction without the crazy shortcuts that pass as 'math instruction' these days. I found them to require decent parental involvement and instruction (although mini-instructions are in the book), but for us that was a huge plus. Not a spiralling program at all, but with enough variety in the book to keep kids from getting bored. Plenty of examples on every page to give your child as many (or as few) as you feel he or she needs to understand the concept completely. For parents looking for good, old fashioned math that gives them the opportunity to teach, and kids the opportunity to practice, then I highly suggest these books. For parents more interested in 'singapore' type math, or who prefer the 'group math' activities as taught in public school, this wil NOT be the math for you. |
