We love this as a healthy alternative to shortening and other cooking oils for baking, frying, popcorn, what have you.

I bought this so my daughter-in-law can do her baking without butter. My toddler granddaughter has serious allergies to dairy, eggs and peanuts...and this is dairy free and 100% vegan, no hydrogenated fats! My DIL made blueberry pie tonight for a BBQ, and the crust was light and flaky. THe only thing lacking was the buttery taste (there is a safe 'butter' extract you can find in the supermarkets that solves that problem); however, that part for now is unimportant b/c this product has solved a big problem--avoiding food allergies for my granddaughter while the rest of us share in the healthy ingredients.

UPDATE: August 2010--I bought this in May at $21.60 for four, and thereafter it was almost TRIPLE the price--What's THAT all about!!! Outrageous! With this product it is clear you have to keep tabs on changing prices. I was at a health food store a few days ago and found this for sale at under $8 each, better price than buying this from Amazon right now!

My toddler son has food allergies. He has egg & soy, plus soy-induced enterocolitis. Needless to say it's difficult feeding him since everything now a days has soy. This product has saved heartache on birthdays and holidays. We try to only make food that he can eat, which is difficult when baking. The baking with this shortening is amazing. You can not tell the difference! We use this plus egg-replacer and we all love the outcome.

This product in itself is a good product. I have used in the past for baking and it works well, but not as well as Tropical Traditions. Also the price has nearly doubled since I no longer see it being sold by Amazon. These outside sellers are really ripping us off. If you want an excellent palm shortening from a reliable company go with Tropical Traditions. They sell their product at a fair price with fast and excellent delivery.

I have since found a more reasonable vender for this product at Amazon. I just ordered 3- 24oz. containers from Vitacost for $27.10 including shipping. That comes to $9.03 per container a much better price indeed.

I love baking and read a lot about it.
There are quite some recipes out there that are calling for vegetable shortening.
By now I avoided cookies & co that have vegetable shortening in their recipes because the most common products always contain hydrogenated vegetable oil. And we know it's not the best fat we should consume.
I got lucky and found this product by Spectrum.
The consistency is smooth and fluffy.
It's very good for baking - I got great results!
Good alternative to other shortenings.

Bought this product to bake cookies and cakes for my nephew, who is allergic to dairy and soy. Have used it instead of butter in several recipes, and obtained great results every time. Spectrum Naturals Shortening has no transfat, no cholesterol! High saturated fat, but from coconut oil, not animal fat. I now use it for my baked desserts, as well, and not only for my nephew.

Highly recommend it!

Yea!!! There is a shortening that actually exists that does not contain soy! Also, it is not hydrogenated, so, much healthier than the others on the market. I'm about half way thru my first tub & everything I've used it in has turned out great. It is a bit expensive, but when dealing with food allergies, the price tends to not be as big of consideration since your choices are sometimes pretty limited. I have checked around though, & the Amazon price is good compared to health-food stores.

I first used Spectrum shortening as a substitute for the products with hydrogenated and partially hydrogenate oils due to their link to cardiovascular disease. I can't find Spectrum anymore where I live and am grateful to find it on Amazon. Anyway, I stay away from the hydrogenated oils but I must warn that it takes me three times as long to shop as so many products in the grocery stores are full of these bad oils. Even more frustrating is finding a product I like that doesn't contain hydrogenated oils only to discover later that the company has added it in the ingredients list. As I mentioned, shopping takes me awhile due to having to read the labels on everything but, really, how much is your heart worth? If you find a product that does not contain hydrogentated oils, let these companies know how much you appreciate it. Hydrogenated oils are bad because the human body cannot break it down and it stays in your system a long time - I read somewhere that it stays for something like 51 days. Cutting out the hydrogenated oils is a big commitment because it is in margarine, frozen dinners, boxed dinners/entrees, cookies, cakes (boxed or already baked), many crackers, some ready to eat breads and puddings, most frozen pizzas, many of the microwave popcorns, but I have gotten used to it and my kids are appreciative of the healthier foods. Hopefully, companies will start eliminating these bad oils from their products if consumers start avoiding them. Hydrogenated oils are used to extend shelf life and provide a creamier texture.

Great product. Organic, gluten and soy free (has been tested by an individual who is VERY sensitive to both gluten and soy), makes great baked goods. By accident, we also found out it makes a great cream for the hands. In fact, we have given up chemical laced hand and massage creams and have filled a small jar with the palm oil shortening and use it instead...it is greasy, but rub it in and then towel off the excess.
