Book Description

November 17, 2000
Speech Science provides an integration of scientific material on the acoustics and physiology of speech production and perception with state-of-the art instrumental techniques used in clinical practice. This book enables the user to easily make the connections between scientific theory and clinical management of communication disorders. This explicit linkage means that readers find the theoretical information meaningful, less intimidating, and more easily accessible. Each chapter demonstrates this connection by first presenting the theoretical information and then applying the principles to assessment and management issues. This comprehensive book, which incorporates principles of speech sound production and perception, relevant anatomy and physiology, and current technology, is both reader- and instructor- friendly. The material is broken into small units that are easy for readers to grasp, with subsequent integration of units into larger domains. For those involved with Speech Science.

4.0 out of 5 stars Way better textbook than what was out there a couple years ago., February 28, 2011
I am retaking Speech and Hearing Science after having failed the course before. In the course that I took previously, the textbook was something only a doctoral student could understand, hence why I just could not pass the class to save my life. This textbook, however, is absolutely easy to understand. I have so far received an A on both of my quizzes this semester just from reading out of the textbook and taking notes. The author does an excellent job just explaining the concepts of speech and hearing science in layman's terms. I have had several "AHA!" moments this semester because I have come to understand concepts that the previous course and text that I used just failed to help me understand. I am not a Speech & Hearing major, just a minor, so I have limited exposure to the field, and I find this book easy to understand and an easy read for someone with my background. If you have a professor who is requiring this textbook, I think you're in good hands. If you're someone who is interested in Speech and Hearing Science in general, I think you'll find this textbook interesting as well. The author does a lot to incorporate aspects of anatomy and physiology that are crucial to understanding speech and hearing science, and the information is not overwhelming. The reason I am giving it four stars instead of five is that I really think that this textbook could benefit from a companion study guide. If I could actually physically see my progress in understanding the material prior to taking the quiz, I would feel a lot better and I think that's something only a study guide can provide. Overall though, a great textbook. I just wish it were more affordable!
