How came it to be that this patriot and national treasure is vilified in history as an ignorant rebel malcontent? Davis makes the case again and again that the nation could be stronger than ever...but for pretty partisan divisiveness. Unfortunately we stand again on the doorstep of division and these words may again go unheeded or attended to fruitlessly. Awake!!

Short. Somewhat enlightening and inspiring, once or twice disturbing. In any case I do wish modern politicians had the respect for the constitution and country displayed herein.

I started reading about southern Generals by first reading " Stonewall Jackson's Maxims." He was a remarkable man, honest, a man of faith and a great General, who lost his life trying to save VA, from, what he thought would be disaster.
Jefferson Davis was much like "Stonewall"in that his beliefs were crystal clear in his speeches. His loyalty belonged in saving the south from a way of life contrary to his beliefs. I haven't read all of his speeches, as yet, but I am anxious to finish them. The leaders on both sides, were complex individuals, but I am very interested in reading the books I can get that were written about all of these men. I am particularly interested in reading books that were written in the 1800s, because that's the period that these men were alive.

An understanding of limited govt. rare or missing today. He understands government by consent of the governed. Modern conservatives need to read this.
